If you notice, a lot of the best cities are in the sunbelt.
I think stating that the Sunbelt seems to be "the best" is slightly disingenuous. The Sunbelt has an extreme lack of testing compared to other regions. Plus, now that they're all protesting and lifting social distancing orders, we should definitely expect the region to see spikes. Virginia, Texas, Arizona, North Carolina, and California are all at the bottom of testing per capita. We have yet to see if that is simply because of fewer symptomatic people, or if that is because of lack of testing equipment/capability.

The "spared" ones that surprise me the most are Raleigh and Tampa, though. Both have a lot of ex-New Yorkers and ex-New Jerseyans living in them, and I don't doubt that the NY-Miami connection contributed to some of Florida's problems.

I have to wonder if it has anything to do with the heat and space. It was over 90 today here in San Antonio. Yes, our testing is low but I’m getting tons of info that tests are available without doctors “orders” if you have symptoms. I think there’s just not that many people sick enough to think they need to be tested. SA has lots of people who should fall in the high risk category but if you take out a horrible outbreak in a nursing home, the death rate is low - out of 39 deaths only 10 are under the age of 60 and most are from the nursing home. I have to admit I’m praying the summer will slow this horrible pandemic... We are also blessed to have more in single family homes rather than crowded apartments.

Here in NY testing is available to all essential workers. I walked into my local urgent care and told them I am a paramedic with countless exposures to COVID and was tested immediately. I walked right back out <10 mins later. Results take a few days depending on how busy they are.

Not sure how easy it is in other states, but was pleasantly surprised how quick and easy it was here. I recommend calling a local urgent care clinic and asking.

Per capita testing statistics are pretty meaningless on their own. It has to be viewed with how many of those being tested are testing positive. In other words of tests given, what percentage produce a positive result? I think the politico graphs do a good job explaining it:

Pittsburgh has been spared pretty well too, and we're testing much better in Pennsylvania than Texas.

Only 10% of tests in Texas come back positive. I think Texas could test more, certainly, but I don't see evidence of a huge coronavirus presence hidden by the lack of testing.

There is a lot of evidence of an "iceberg" of 40-50 unconfirmed cases for every one confirmed case, but my guess is that this ratio is actually quite a bit lower in Texas than in other places. For example we have less than 500 deaths, compared to 1100 in Pennsylvania. Given that one would expect Penn to have 2x as many cases.

Because the coronavirus spreads through droplets, humidity can determine how long the droplets stay suspended in the air. A more humid environment means much more water will clump onto the virus droplets and cause it to fall to the ground quicker. Since warm air can hold more humidity than cold air, then this happens more often in warmer air.

This doesn't mean that a crowd of people won't be infected just because it's warm and humid, but more like if someone sneezes or cough then the droplets might travel only 2 feet instead of 5 feet or stay in the air for just 30 minutes instead of a whole hour. In theory, the virus could have a harder time spreading in warmer weather, but if people aren't practicing good hygiene and social distancing, then any effect the weather has is completely negated. Plus considering most people spend time within air conditioned buildings, environmental differences have a marginal effect at best.
