Two states similarly sized in population, two states stereotyped as "hick" but in reality full of natural beauty and culture.

Which do you choose?

Have only been to Oklahoma, but I'd take Alabama for the Gulf Coast alone. The Gulf Coast is my favorite part of the entire country when it comes to scenery and weather. Then on top of that, you have Huntsville. There's simply no economy in Oklahoma that can even touch Huntsville's boom.

Other Alabama cities' economies are stagnant and OKC could beat them, though.

As for which feels more redneck, I guess it's a wash. I have been to Mississippi, and I'd say Oklahoma is just as redneck as Mississippi, just in a more cowboy/imitation-Texas way while Mississippi is more Forrest Gump. Strangely enough I've heard just as many Southern accents in OKC as I have in Mississippi or Louisiana.

Of course, both Alabama and Oklahoma are often unjustifiably lampooned for being near the bottom in everything.

Having this matchup is fair for me since I normally will inherently choose the more liberal state as my preferred. In this situation, neither is liberal whatsoever.

That said, Birmingham does seem more cultural with what seems to be a stronger urban core and I believe a better culinary scene? I enjoyed my time in Mobile. Had fun bar hopping. Fairhope was really cute. I like that Alabama has beaches. It feels more connected to other places with Mobile being a short drive to Nola and Birmingham being close to Atlanta/Nashville.

OK. There were plenty of Okies in Cinco Ranch--mostly transplants from Bartlesville in the aftermath of the Conoco and Phillips merger--when I moved to Katy 15 years ago. Some of them were my high school classmates and they seemed to be pretty cool. Other classmates were expats from oil producing countries; never saw such cosmopolitanism until then!

Alabama. Their tornado risk is lower than OK, there's more topographical variance, and it has a coastline.

I live in Birmingham. Between Birmingham and Florence, 100 miles to the NW, is one of country's most dangerous areas for long-track F4s and F5s. The part of town where I live is relatively safe, but I wouldn't live between Birmingham and Florence without a serious underground shelter.

Ivan hit us pretty hard in Birmingham. The tornado in Heflin got us and one in DFW. Riding from Columbus to Anniston in Opal started out as a dare and turned serious. We made it! Our houses in TX/OK had/have in residence shelters big enough for us plus more and cats in big carriers.

I didn't say there wasn't a tornado risk in AL. I said that the risk in AL was LOWER than in OK.
