Sorry, I addressed that in my next post. Like I said don't want to only criticize when I'm not doing the work but the easiest way would be to add weights based on ethnic diversity of the country.

I also pointed out the issues of making it more subjective. Maybe if language spoken at home data was available that would be a better impromptu use for ethnicity. Of course that has it's own issues as well as I pointed out with Switzerland but it's much less problematic in my honest opinion than using national boundaries. You could probably manage to squeeze a combination of both.

To further clarify: You could do something like this since regions generally have themes, rather than going country by country to decide which stat captures the ethnic diversity more. I don't know if the data is available though.
For Europe and East Asia- Either National origin or languages spoken at home would suffice, since the continent and region are largely ethnostates with a shared language.
For MENA and Latin America- since Arabic and Spanish dominate the region but their is clearly more ethnic groups than that, countries could suffice
For Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, SE Asia- since multiethnic countries are the norm in these 3 regions of the world it would make the most sense to use linguistic diversity as an impromptu.

I would also set the number of speakers on the language barrier lower just because you can speak multiple languages but you can't identify as both Indian or Pakistani on national origin, so someone who could speak Urdu at home but doesn't because everyone in their family speaks English isn't included.

That could be a way to more collectively attack the question of ethnic diversity. But it's a lot of work that i'm suggesting so I assume it would be a hassle to do.

Gotcha gotcha! Do you know what the linguistic breakdown of Indians in the US is?

I don't but the data that As Above So Below has posted on cities shows that, each city has their own diverse mix of Indian ethnicities with Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu and Bengali all putting up good numbers. If I remember correctly Hindi was number one but I think the Indian American population had more diverse linguistic origins than India itself.

On a different thread you mean? And does Dallas have a significant different Indian population in terms of language and religion than Los Angeles or Washington?

I do. I also threw in African languages. Now my question is how can we use this to refine a diversity ranking or breakdown? I dont mean that patronizingly either. This is a topic Im passionate about and I want to find an accurate way to score cities, MSAs, CSAs, and urban areas in orders or tiers of diversity. So if there is a way to incorporate this, Im all for it:

I don't remember L.As but Dallas, SF-SJ, Houston, New York and D.C's seemed radically different from each other and it was on a different thread. But because of this it's part of the reason I think when talking ethnicity India should be measured by number of speakers. I should also say South Asia because Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu clearly cross boundaries into other countries. Theirs's also the issue of a Hindi-Urdu speaker not belonging to a single ethnic group as it is a lingua-Franca spoken by many peoples but like I said ethnicity is the definition of "on a spectrum" and nearly impossible to measure accurately.

The only Indian ethnicity I know of that was large and not represented was the Odisha/Odia speakers. I looked for it but couldn't find the exact thread. I'm sure AASB remembers the thread I'm talking about.

Something interesting was brought up about Sicilian/Italian being different culturally and yes, they are two distinct cultures within Italy. I am Sicilian, we have our own dialect and culture that is unique, I even identify myself as Sicilian rather than Italian (unless in the U.S cause some people can't grasp the concept of different ethnic groups within a nation). With that said, in Canadian Census data, they do classify Sicilian as an ethnic origin, I'm not sure if they do the same in the U.S. We also do the same in South Asian countries or Latin American countries that have their own respective cultures within a modern state boundary. So of course, it would be beneficial to include data of different ethnic groups within a nation (regionally, linguistic, etc..) that have immigrated to U.S cities.

I don't think this sort of thing will get us closer to an all-encompassing ranking of ethnic diversity in the States without doing it for every country in the world. Nationality isn't perfect, but it's a heck of a lot easier. However at the very least, Indian diversity is a neat sub-topic within the scope of ethnic diversity and language seems like an alright tool to dig into it a bit. I took your data on the Indian languages and rearranged it by % for each city...

Any Indian-American posters who can illuminate some of these trends? I'm particularly interested in why Punjabi speakers seem to love Sacramento and hate Austin. Or what's behind the Gujarati pluralities in Chicago and Philly? Maybe the numbers are generally too small to pull much? Like Riverside seems to have a large Punjabi percentage, but it only amounts to 5,416 people in an MSA of 4.6 million.
