This thread is a follow up to the one I did on racial diversity. The goal is to find the best way to rank places in terms of ethnic diversity. As usual, Im open to critique if someone has ideas.

To gage concentration, here is the total percentage the top 5 ethnic groups comprise by CSA. My reasoning is that the lower the number, the more diverse the CSA's immigrant and ethnic profile will be. A high number would reflect a higher concentration of fewer ethnic/immigrant groups.

Washington DC: 32.9%
New York/Newark: 35.0%
Boston/Providence/Worchester: 37.1%
Orlando: 37.8%
Philadelphia: 38.1%
Minneapolis/St. Paul: 40.1%

Dallas/Fort Worth: 63.9%
Las Vegas: 65.2%
Phoenix: 65.8%
San Jose/San Francisco: 66.6%
San Diego: 66.9%

Below is the percentage of immigrants that moved from other parts of the US. The higher the number, the more the immigrant group comprises of immigrants that moved domestically. The lower the number, the more the immigrant community came from directly from their home country as opposed to having moved between cities domestically.

Orlando: 60.8%
Las Vegas: 56.2%
Denver: 56.0%
Atlanta: 54.0%
Philadelphia: 52.6%

This is really awesome! I will say though, maybe another formula can be: foreign born population/immigrants (historically and new of course), people born in the U.S but identify by their ethnic origin (so Italian instead of American for example, even though they were born in the U.S but they're ethnically Italian) and the total number of ethnic groups present within a metropolitan area.

When comparing ethnic diversity, I personally like to include all communities (even if there's only 500 people) and both foreign and national born people who identify with their origin. I also like to include language, so percentages of people who are bilingual, trilingual and how many languages are spoken in a metropolitan area overall. I think factoring all this will lead to a more robust way on tracking ethnic diversity and more accurately, since it'll be adding foreign/national born, all communities present and languages.

For the whole picture--not just a raw number that favors larger cities--consider the % of different nationalities above a specific threshold (ex. above 0.5% of MSA's population).
https://www.migrationpolicy.org/prog...ropolitan-area

NYC may technically get one additional point for Vietnamese immigrants (barely above your 20K threshold), but ultimately it is #66 amongst all MSAs in terms of their concentration as a percentage of population size. In fact, every single MSA on this list has a higher % vietnamese immigrant population than NYC. So not sure that NYC deserves the 1 point compared to the others.

I appreciate the list though! Just something worth considering.

If I’m not mistaken there are over 20,000 Ethiopians living in DFW. I think there’s more Ethiopians in DFW than there are Nigerians. Could be wrong but I’ve seen numbers suggesting the number is well over 20,000.

The biggest issue for me is I feel like there needs to be a threshold. Having a community of 500 anything in a place like NYC or LA wont amount to any significant impact on the city at large. That is why I drew the line at 20,000.

That said, you do have a point that 20K may be hard to evenly apply to a place like NYC vs a place like Austin. I did think about trying to find a way to draw it further down as CSA's got smaller, but I felt it would be too messy to draw that line. I may have been wrong though. Perhaps 20K is a good line for CSAs over 9 million, but as we get between 5-8 million maybe 15K is a better mark. As we get between 2 million and 5 million, maybe 10K is a better mark. After all, 20K Vietnamese in NYC wont have nearly the impact 10K Vietnamese would in Austin.

Point taken about American born ethnicities as well, but I think it depends on the ethnicity. For example, Texas is full of "Germans", but theyve been here for so long that I dont really consider counting them as anything other than American white. The American born Irish in Boston and Chicago would be other examples. They dont live much different from their other white counterparts. But for Hondurans or Ethiopians or Iraqis, etc. born in America there is a better chance they will stand out more for traditional American culture. So the question would be how can we organize that?

There are actually more Nigerians in DFW than Ethiopians. There are about 13K foreign born Ethiopians in DFW, though if you count first generations that moves up to about 25K.

What DFW does have that only DC, Minneapolis, and Seattle top is a very large East African population. DFW has the largest Kenyan and Tanzanian populations in the US. There are more East Africans in DFW than NYC!

But it didnt quite make the threshold for foreign born here.

Dallas/Fort Worth: 5
Chicago: 5

Austin: 4
Charlotte: 4
Portland: 4
Minneapolis/St. Paul: 4

I think looking at regions of the biggest contributors is important too. Ill build off the list I made above. If were going to measure true diversity, the how heavily a CSA/MSA/City is weighted towards one region should count against it.

The numbers next to the city represent the number of countries that area has over 0.5% of the population. For example, the number 4 under Houston and "Central America", means there are 4 immigrant groups from Central America that make up more than 0.5% of the Houston CSA population (Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala in this case).

For simple sake of argument, I am going to leave Canada out of this ranking since they are culturally very similar to us and they are hard to geographically group apart from us. You can see where it ranked in my OP for the pertinent CSAs.

I am, however, going to count Puerto Ricans here. They are American, but a very distinctive ethnic group. All CSAs got a point in the Caribbean column for Puerto Ricans except: LA/Riverside, Portland, and Minneapolis/St. Paul where they did not make up 0.5% of the population.

Also of note, Mexico is included in Central America's number.

Anyway, here we go!

Here is how they scored by number of regions where each CSA had at least one country that contributes at least 0.5% to the total population:

New York City: 6
Houston: 6
Boston: 6
Sacramento: 6

Washington DC/Baltimore: 5

San Jose/San Francisco: 4
Dallas/Fort Worth: 4
Chicago: 4
Atlanta: 4
Philadelphia: 4
Seattle/Tacoma: 4
San Diego: 4
Detroit: 4
Minneapolis/St. Paul: 4
Tampa: 4
Phoenix: 4
Austin: 4

Miami/Port St. Lucie/Fort Lauderdale: 3
Los Angeles/Riverside: 3
Orlando: 3
Las Vegas: 3
Charlotte: 3
Portland: 3

Denver: 2

Its important to remember this is just one piece of the puzzle. This is not to imply that somehow Philadelphia is more diverse than LA or Miami/Fort Lauderdale because it obviously isnt. However, when taking the data as a whole, it is enough to say that if two CSAs are very close in other diversity statistics, this could be a tie breaker.

Interesting, Mexico makes the top 5 largest immigrant group for every CSA other than DC, Miami, and Boston.

As Above So Below, are you sure the Bolivian foreign born in DC is not above 20k? I did not see it listed. The DC area had the highest Bolivian American population in 2010 at above 37,000, but not sure how many of those are/were "foreign born".

IIRC, in 2014 there were ~26,000 Irish Born Americans in Greater Boston after the 2011-2013 wave, per the Globe. Surprised not to see Ireland under Boston CSA. Would assume its close-ish to 30k now.
