Maybe a ChicagoLand vs Greater Boston area thread would have sufficed.
Chicago would still win. And yes the urban rural divide in IL is one of the sharpest I have seen. Many down state IL tags regularly visit TN.

Chicago as a city, Massachusetts as a State.

Neither are really that close, respectively.

MA for this comparison, by a pretty wide margin.

Southern IL is prettier than people credit it for and it's close to a lot of other great nature. SE Missouri is a real gem.

Best Overall: Massachusetts edges Illinois for me. Chicago is incredible, but Illinois outside of Chicago is quiet and with not a lot going on. Rolling countryside and farms. Mass wins too due to the Berkshires and the coast and Cape Cod, which are stunning.

This is very accurate

It's difficult to have this comparison without removing Boston and Chicago metros from it.

Even with Boston growing and Chicago contracting?

Edit: per my calculations, at their current rates a Chicago-sized chunk of the Boston area will pass Chicago in population in 60 years.
