NC’s middle is average (though it isn’t flat like Kansas). The strengths lie on the coast (which can be fairly dramatic) and the mountains.

Not really. Washington state definitely one of the most beautiful states.

Eastern Washington also has incredible canyonlands and gorges. It’s not at all hideous.

Secondly, the major population centers in Washington state live in the beautiful western third. Whereas the main population centers of NC live in mostly unremarkable geography.

States don’t become less prettier based on where people live. Alaska’s beauty isn’t impacted by where Juneau is located.

Yeah, if outstanding scenery is what you want, then it's Washington. If you're ok with good, but unremarkable outdoors, then there's still a choice.

Both states are quite similar, but I prefer NC as it gets a lot more sunshine.

Proximity is absolutely relevant. Otherwise states are just arbitrary political boundaries and the bigger states can boast more attractions. Washington state is awesome precisely because most of the Western Washington attractions are a day trip away from the major population centers which lie in Western Washington.

I can hike a mile high in the alpine meadows with the marmots, sail in the Salish sea with orcas and then take a dip at the bottom of an old growth forested waterfall, all in the same day. That kind of concentrated geographic diversity is super rare. All the more rare when I can get there without significant driving or planning from Seattle proper. It’s incredible.

If you have to take an airplane from Juneau to see some of the sights in Alaska, then it does dilute the appeal. Might still be pretty but we aren’t talking only on pretty alone. Convenience and access matter too to state preferences.

You can be in a sagebrush desert and a glacier (in August) on that same day as well.

But states are political entities with set boundaries. We don’t discount Big Bend from Texan attributes because it’s 500 miles from the Texas Triangle.

Your point of Seattle being closer to dramatic nature than Charlotte is fair. To say NC’s beauty is less than because Asheville and Elizabeth City aren’t the major NC population centers is something different (and wrong).
