The issue with the CN Tower is that over the years, they've built so much tall junk right around it that it barely stands out anymore. I recall as a kid, driving into Toronto, and seeing that structure towering over everything else from far away.
Now? You see it, sure, but it no longer stands out. It's just there.
This is why I am an advocate for height regulations in cities. Not every city needs to look like NYC or Hong Kong.
The view from the lake is what is most recognized for me so I don't think its blocked by anything.
I've noticed a theme over the years: Seattle's skyline is used a LOT, often without identifying the city. The latest examples are this year's two Ryan Reynolds movies, both filmed in Canada by the same director. They didn't mention the location but included the Space Needle in both composite skylines. Also I've noticed it in random movies and shows, some by Netflix.
I don't know if they Reynolds movies are using Seattle's brand (both are tech-focused) or we're just anonymous. But the Space Needle makes me think it's more the brand, though in a low-key way. One movie is in the woods a lot so Seattle is an easy stand-in vs. Vancouver. The other could have easily used Toronto.
My guess outside of the US and Canada, it's going to be Toronto.
Toronto is more impressive and it's placement as a premier city in Canada, makes it more prominent than Seattle.
People know it. Sort of like when an American travels and someone asks if you are from NYC, or LA...they don't ask if you are from Seattle. For Canadians travelling, it's mostly Toronto people ask about, since they know it.
I think people are getting this thread confused with “Which Skyline do you like more?”. The CN tower is more expressive looking without any context, but thats not how we are judging this poll. Also C-D recognizable is significantly different than the general public. The Space needle at one point was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi river and and inspired the jet age towers that we see today. Toronto is larger than Seattle, and has a much larger skyline. However, Toronto gets the privilege of filming alot of movies and TV shows, why Seattle gets the privilege of being the backdrop for these shows. If you went to a random city in France and showed 18-32 year olds a picture of the Seattle skyline, it would be almost instantly recognizable because of shows like Grey’s Anatomy and movies like Twilight and 50 Shades of grey. I don’t think Toronto’s skyline is as universally recognizable outside of NA.
Seattle has the Space Needle; Toronto has the CN Tower.
For Canadians, Toronto
For Americans, Seattle
