There’s many sphere towers around the world one could mistake for another if removed from its surroundings. The CN Tower is one of them, the Space Needle is not. For that reason alone I think you have to go with Seattle on this one.
The CN tower is the OG sphere tower and it's 3x taller and far more recognizable than the space needle, along with the overall Toronto lake-view skyline shot.
Wait a minute… people here are really arguing that the Seattle skyline is more recognizable GLOBALLY than Toronto?? No, people outside of the US generally do not have a clue what the Seattle skyline looks like. I’d say there are really only 3, maybe 4 skylines in the US that people outside of NA will recognize, and Seattle is not one of them.
Of course they don't. Most people don't know skylines at all (ok, maybe Paris, DC, SF, Cairo, and Athens due to landmarks, and New York due to the ESB and general mass). Shanghai isn't far off.
Seattle's claim isn't skyline. It's the Space Needle. It's why Seattle's skyline is a common stand-in for movies filmed in Canada that want a location-based cue, along with the Vancouver-like environment.
CN Tower used to get attention for being the tallest, and still gets some for that reason. Its height is certainly impressive. I liked the view from it, though its was oddly restricted. But I don't see it in movies that much. I suspect that's partially because US studios want a US setting (one with some Chinese recognizability), but it's also a common ball-on-stick style that doesn't make the location obvious to enough people.
I still haven't voted btw. Several people have the same opinion I do...Toronto for much of the world, and Seattle for the US. I'd add that Toronto's world advantage might not be that large...despite its size, the skyline probably underperforms in recognizability vs. Seattle's which overperforms.
People here see the CN Tower and ask “what’s wrong with the Space Needle?”.
And on the other hand, I always thought that the space needle looked like that tower in Calgary.
But this is what happens when a city builds a ton of similar-looking glass boxes… The skyline becomes somewhat generic, which I think is the case for both Seattle and Toronto.
I can’t vote on this either by the way, as I don’t think either one of them are “recognizable” outside of NA.
Just got back from Toronto and must say the overall city Skyline is incredible. Some could argue the GTA has more cranes up they almost anywhere in the world. Last time I saw that many cranes across the entire GTA was when I last visited Dubai.
