Facts! They're the best I've had. No amount of NYC bravado could convince me otherwise. I love St Viateur bagels in Montreal, and it's in Le Plateau, my favorite neighborhood.

Absolutely. The bravado from NY boosters on here is disappointing but not surprising. They even admit that they've never had a Montreal bagel but just know that the NY bagels are better because, well, they're from NY. I've had both, and I would gladly stand in line in the snow on rue Saint-Viateur (which I have done) for a warm bagel fresh out of the wood-fired stone oven. The absolute best. There are many, many things that Montreal does right, and those bagels are among them.

Right on!
Besides, not all bagels are born equal. The two bagel shops I mentioned are the standouts among many others in the city that don’t deliver the same quality. They can be close but not as good. I’ve had NY bagels anumber of times in NYC but found them less tasty. I even had Montreal style in NYC near Union Square, I think. Not quite the same as the homegrown, but not bad either…
Grew up with NY, still the benchmark for USA even if there's been a general decline in quality across bagel shops in the region with craft-type shops here and there rising to counter that trend.
That said, Montreal's St Viateur all the way, baby. No contest. (they are not sweet, btw. I detest sweet bagels.)
Easiest thread, Montreal bagels are superior. Light, crispy, slightly sweet, beautiful texture, wood oven baked which is the best thing ever. NY bagels are "mid" at best, too chewy, too pedestrian for my taste, reminds me of every bagel you find. I'll take St. Viateur bagels over anything all day, every day.

Oh, I am not doubting you. I am sure they are good.

Jokes aside, Montreal bagels for me, and its not even particularly close. There is thankfully a place that does a decent version in Massachusetts now, that helps hold me over for when I get the real thing in MTL.
