I went last weekend and ate the bagels in Montreal. Count me in as a fan!
The BEST! I recently took some clients from NYC and Miami there on their visits to Montreal, they said it was the best bagels they've had. Even better, they like St. Viateur more than Fairmount! Made securing the deal even easier
I recently tried my first proclaimed Montreal-style bagel in St. Urbain in Toronto. I have to say that after much hype I was not totally impressed. It was a good bagel, just not a great one. The consistency was too “bready” (soft) for my liking, although the subtle sweetness was delightful.
Anyone ever eaten one in Toronto? I suspect the one I tried was not quite as authentic as what would be found in Montreal, so I’ll reserve judgment for now, but currently feeling like it’s actually not a close comparison.

Well, you had a Montreal bagel in Toronto, so of course it won't hit the same as a St. Viateur bagel or Fairmount bagel. It's a different experience when you eat it in Montreal.

Sure, but there are an abundance of fantastic New York bagel shops outside of New York City. To CXT2000‘s point, maybe the famous spots in Montreal are the only ones that get it right.
