Pardon my fellow Jerseyan. lol. We all do not think like that.
However, can you recommend a good bagel place in Montreal?
St. Viateur is my personal favourite and I'd consider it the best bagel spot globally. Fairmount is another one, located two blocks South, also a local favourite.
We consider these "religious" institutions, if you will

I went to Montreal many years ago, and my memory is St. Viateur and Fairmount were the 2 main bagel places that get talked about. I'm not sure if there are any other bagel places in Montreal that fall under the radar, that I missed.

Other good places are
1. Bagels on Greene
2. Le Trou
3. Beaubien Bagels
all three are awesome, but St. Viateur will forever be my #1.
I just got back from a trip to Montreal this weekend. My partner and I went to St. Viateur on a recommendation from a local. I have to say that I wasn’t very impressed. The bagels were pretty tough and chewy. If that’s Montreal’s best, then I don’t think they can hold a candle against Boston let alone NYC.

Nice, I'm going to be in Montreal next weekend and have plans to try Viateur and possibly Fairmount also. I am curious, had you had a Montreal bagel before? Or just went in blind? Texturally, they are definitely different than other bagels.

Went in blind, haha! So much so that I was surprised I couldn’t get a sandwich at St. Viateur and that the spreads were sold cold and separately.
After buying 4 fresh bagels at the store, we went around the corner to a cafe that had them and I was able to try one toasted and in sandwich-form too.

As you one of the only posters not from NYC or Montreal area participating in this... I appreciate the insight.

Tough and chewy... two words you never ever hear about Montreal bagels lol, nice try though! (can't wait to see the U.S posters say this is "Canadian boosterism" or some other "ism").
