DC is the most transient urban/metro area in the United States, so yeah. By these most recent numbers posted DC also comes in top 5 in NE born residents, top 10 in Western born residents, and essentially tied with NYC (just 1k less) at 10th with Midwestern born residents.

I already knew this but the lack of Mexico on much of the cities is noticeable.

Immigration is being led by China, India, and Central America.

DC's Salvardoran and Ethiopian still growing strongely. Not suprised about Afghanistan increasing either. Even before the Fall of Kabul, there was a large Afghan population, especially in NoVa.

Salvadorans might be the only Latin population that doesn't have huge numbers in Miami. Interesting.

It is not surprising. Much of the Upper South views DC as their “big city.”

While there certainly are plenty of immigrants coming from Mexico, it's not nearly as many as certain right wing "news" outlets would have you believe. They conflate the fact that Central Americans walk through Mexico to the border and to their ignorant brains can't understand the difference.

The standard of life in Mexico is a lot closer to the States than most will admit too, which means most people are ok to stay put.

To clarify, they may be "coming from Mexico" but they aren't Mexican for now. Central American, Venezuelan, and Cuban for the most part.

But agreed about the scare tactics the media employs.

So is the whole immigration has slowed mantra dying?
I know that visa migration is still down but border crossings last year was 4 times that of 2020, and we have already surpassed last year by 25%.

I am not sure how many who cross actually get to stay but the numbers seem to be rebounding.

Dumb question, but why are Cubans going the Mexican route? I am also wondering which cities are experiencing a major Venezuelan boom apart from Houston.

There has also been a spike in Haitian crossings since their Earthquake and political unrest. Are there specific allowances for them like there are for Venezuelans? Haitians, PRs, DRs west of the Mississippi numbers are really low. It would be interesting to see where the Caribbean community grows in the west.

Don't forget the census is counting not just Northern VA but DC itself and MD as Southern. Depending on your prospective or even most people prospective that number is warped

Delaware too. But it doesn't matter so long as the same states are applied to each Urban Area and its clear what those states are.

Seems as though Nicaragua dropped its Visa requirements for Cubans. They can fly there and then make it by land to the U.S. through Mexico. If they go by boat to Florida and get caught on the water they are immediately returned to Cuba.
