The southeast, sure but I wouldn’t say that about the entire south.

This is The American South:
The American South
Georgia
South Carolina
Alabama
Mississippi
Tennessee
North Carolina
Louisiana
Arkansas (including Missouri south of U.S. Route 60)
Kentucky (minus Cincinnati suburbs, but including Missouri Bootheel))
North Florida (north of Orlando)
South Virginia (from just north of Charlottesville on southward, including most of Shenandoah Valley and the part of West Virginia south of Charleston)
The Capital or Primate City of The American South: Atlanta

That ain't the South - everyone knows this. The census designation is outdated - and was only put together for "convenience" purposes.
Atlanta is the primate city of the American South.
(See above for the official American South area)
I don't know Man, I See the Logic For and Against that. Atlanta is definitely the Major City in the South Minus Florida. But that's the problem. Atlanta always needs a Qualifier to be the "Primate City" It's Always Minus Texas or Miami or DC. Real Primate Cities don't Work like that. New York is the Primate City of the Northeast. No Qualifier needed. It's Never NY is the Primate City except for Boston. Or NY is the City if you exclude Pennsylvania
Technically by dictionary definition True Primate Cities are more than Twice the size of the Next City. So Atlanta currently has to have a metro of 12 Million (2x Miami) to Reign Supreme in the Southeast. If Texas than Atlanta needs 16 Million Souls in it's MSA (2x Dallas) To Truly Rule the South
Sorry Man, Atlanta is definitely a Powerhouse City, But Not THE Primate City in the South. It has too much nearby Regional competition
As per the Thread To Answer the Thread since Apparently booming Well Known Metros of 2 million with ascendant economies is Not "Major" and from A Atlanta Centric point of View. Only Metros of 6 Million or up are Major you are looking at decades before Nashville and Charlotte enter that presumably 4-6 Million Range to become "Major". Maybe the 2040'a thru the 2060's

What is too much regional competition? The distance from Atlanta to Miami (around 700 miles) is similar to the distance as Atlanta to Chicago (720 miles) or Atlanta to Philadelphia (777 miles) or Atlanta to Dallas (781 miles).

Too Much Southern Competition. Too Many Cities considered "Southern" that can Challenge Atlanta in a number of Metrics even in the SouthEast. It's Not the Distance in Miles , it's the Geographic Area being discussed which in this case is the SouthEast. Primate Cities have 0 challengers and since Miami can still go mono e mono with Atlanta in the SouthEast in a number of Metrics (tourism, urban density etc) Atlanta has Competition in the SouthEast and therefore cannot be a primate city
I'm not sure what's so hard to understand.
NY, Chicago and LA are all 3times+ the size of the next largest metro in their respective regions.
The South doesn't have a metro that comes any where near that. And if there is a top contender it is certainly not superboosted Atlanta. Atlanta is the 3rd largest metro and 4th largest Urban Area in the south with DC excluded.
Like someone up-thread said, there are no justifications for New York, LA and Chicago to claim the primate title. But Atlanta boosters do the most. Widdling the south to a region that's not even the most populated region of the south JUST TO MAKE ATL A VIABLE CHOICE.
Atlanta is such an afterthought in my part of the South.
It’s a big and impressive city but it offers nothing culturally or economically to the metros of Virginia.
Its brand seems so cheesy and dated from up here too. It doesn’t inform the fashion, the food or the arts anywhere outside of Georgia (save cheesy theme restaurants).
The South doesn’t have a premier city, just a bunch of powerhouse regional cities.

Now hold on now. Atlanta is not a regional city.
It is a National/ Global city.
It is just not the biggest, Global city in the south.
