Would be interested in an answer for Hawaii, I really have no sense of the different cities there
What about Honolulu/Hilo?

In Cali, I see a lot of similarities between SF and LA, even though the physical layouts and infrastructure are different, and the natives of each metro make a big deal about NorCal v s. SoCal.

But I've never heard anybody say anything positive about Bakersfield, which I'd nominate as the polar opposigte of San Francisco.

That's the first one that came to mind.

I was thinking San Diego and San Francisco, though maybe not so much in recent decades.

They aren't really that different. Austin is getting more Dallas-ish and Dallas is getting more Austin-ish.

Agreed. SF with Bakersfield or Fresno is probably the best answer among prominent CA cities.

Realistically, Bakersfield is probably fine if you're looking for cheap rent in a warm, sunny place that's big enough to have all the basic amenities. Especially if you don't want FL/TX/AZ state politics. It's just that it gets compared to places like Sacramento, SF, and LA on account of its large city population (407k), when really it functions as more of a 100-150k city.

Disagree on all of them. The first two aren’t that different. Asheville and Wilmington are better for NC.
