Houston and St. Louis are not unique in this situation. DC, Chicago, Miami, and more are dead at night.

Well from what I heard from New Yorkers, the "downtown" area that most people in the US would recognize that as is not that busy in itself at times after dark.

Well not downtown, that's where the financial centers are. Of course that won't be busy at night because that all closes when Wall St. does. There's mostly businesses around there. But there are areas downtown that are very hopping, like the East and West villages, Soho, etc.

Weekends are a different story. I was talking about during the week. How do people stay out until 1:00 in the morning or even later? Don't they have work to wake up for? I understand some people work the 2nd or 3rd shift, but still.

Well, it's a Sunday night and I just got back from sushi, about 8pm. The restaurant was packed and there were people walking all over the streets. It was fairly crowded. This is Astoria in NYC.

Chicago is dead at night? Maybe in the loop proper only. Definitely not dead though. That is like saying NYC is dead at night... yeah, in the financial district...

Don't most people associate it with Times Square area... wouldn't say that is dead at night.

but its in manhattan and often on TV, no?

your downtown is going to be subjective to somebody from outside the city (in this case, most peoples views), as is suburbs to city, to an inner city dweller to downtown, to a centrally inner city dweller to midtown to downtown to uptown, etc.
