In terms of nightlife, people on the street...is the city centre dead by 6pm, or is it vibrant?

I know NYC, Chicago, Miami are obvious examples; I hear downtown LA is quite dead after dark; what about other parts of SoCal?

Anyway someone suggested this and I thought it was an interesting topic.

Weekdays it's dead after 6pm
Weekends there are pockets of activity around the city that are active at night but nothing comparable to the other major cities.
The city is just to spread out to have any real concentrated areas of activity. I think if we had more transit options the city would be more active in certain areas at night and we also need more people living within the inner loop. I live Uptown and even I find it a hassle to drive Downtown to go out. I think most people would rather just stay within a close proximity of where they live to go out and for a city like Houston that really spreads out the area where people go out and also makes those areas not very concentrated with people.

When I was in Houston it seemed hoppin' after dark. Of course, thats comparing to Little Rock, which is pretty much dead after 8pm except for a few areas of town.

Well in Houston, it depends on where you live. I live in 3rd Ward and it is pretty crazy every night with people bumpin their music, dancing, getting drunk, getting high, etc.

I agree with Westhou, I hate going downtown or near it around weekends because it is so backed up and crowded. The whole city of Houston isn't dead after dark, but it isn't exactly alive either.

Houston can be pretty dead (and very dark where I live) at night, but on occasional weekends you can run into some hefty traffic around midnight.
