I'd say it's more Appalachian than Southern... but down in MD if you cross the Chesapeake Bay and go into rural Eastern MD, you can swear you were in NC sometimes.

Then again you're from NY, I've heard people up your way say the MidAtlantic region in general sounds more Southern, while Southerners call us Yankees (referring to Baltimore and PA... not Eastern MD). I have a friend that moved here from GA, and she sticks out like a white dude at a Panther convention. This region is the red-headed stepchild neither side claims

So you think she has more of a rural accent? She's from Wilmington though, which isn't really rural.

When you think about it the Southern accent that's heard outside of Nawlins, Savannah/Charleston/SC lowcountry, the Tidewater area, and the larger cities are rural anyway (or Appalachian) so that's why they sound similar. Ex: PA, outside of the metro area can sound "southern" but they're rural.

I've always been fond of the Boston and New England accents. I grew up hearing this accent from my relatives (and still often hear it spoken), and it conjures up good memories.

For me it would be Eastern Southern - an umbrella term for Virginia Piedmont, lowland Carolina type accents. They are different enough from Standard American while also seeming a bit more classy, no offense lol.

Poll troll strikes again!

Again..how can you make such an observation if you've never been to the US?! Are you that attention starved? Several of your "options" in the poll don't even make sense!

I only know one person from Wilmington, and she has a generic middle class accent.... I would've thought people there would have the Philly sound if anything, since they're right there.

Could be maybe your friend hung around people that had that Eastern MD thing going (straight Southern) or were influenced by it. ...I had/have a lot of Jersey friends that rubbed off on me, so that's probably why people swear I'm from up that way.
