I thought the current crisis was started in Southern California's suburbs? San Francisco is the financial center for Western North America.

Let's see. Our nation founded in 1776 plus throw in another 1000 years of Native Culture, exploration, and colonization. Where on Earth do we get LSD, hippies, and the Castro as great influences in our "subjective who we are"? Again, I thank San Franciscans for all that they have contributed but second to NYC????? Get a life!

It's funny because most people consider these as examples of counter-culture. How incredibly ironic!

Yes, San Francisco has included plenty on a very low class level. Certainly leads the nation in whackiness, frivolity, outrageousness, drollery, supporting the fringes of immoral behavior, sexual identity experimentation, and incredibly low class music. I once heard a guy say that he was a transgendered crossdresser who was a bisexual lesbian who hated flaming gay men.

I would not rank it anywhere near New York-Boston corridor, the DC/So MD/No VA, Chicago-North Shore, or LA-Hollywood for influence however. Not even close.
