Can you provide us some data to back up your argument?
What is there to back up???
Mexico City serves triple duty as Mexico's political/financial/cultural center and is home to 22 million people. The Bay Area only serves as the most important metropolitan area in Northern California and is home to 7 million people.

Mexico City has a huge effect on Mexico and its peoples whether within Mexico or abroad. That surely accounts for something in the US, eh?
Additionally, Mexico City is the media capital for the Spanish-speaking world and the economic hub of Latin America (the Mexican Stock Exchange located in Mexico City is worth over $600 billion). Media and money are pretty big factors when it comes to cultural influence, no?
But whatever, Bay Area is great. Second only to NYC in the US? Not too likely.
Some of the most influential architects in the 21st century also called Chicago home..Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Helmut Jahn..etc to name a few.
The most powerful and influential celebrity-Oprah Winfrey also resides in Chicago, not to mention the greatest basketball player in NBA history-Michael Jordan.
Is there already a music band named Chicago? Chicago, the musical holds the record for longest-running revival on Broadway, and has been a popular show whether it's playing in New York, Chicago, London, Toronto,Tokyo, Sydney or Seoul...etc. The film Chicago won 6 Oscars in 2003.
Chicago has also been recognized by mayors from around the world as the leader in green urban planning & development. CME is currently the world's largest and most influential futures exchange.

"Following high school, he moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College.[23] ". He was still 18, thats a teenager, and yes, still a kid as you said. He did go to high school in Hawaii also, so they are not mutually exclusive.
You said he went to school as a teen in LA and that's not really accurate.

Obviously. But Mexico City is not more influential in the US than the large US Metros are. That's doesnt make sense.

You obviously no very little about 'the spanish speaking world'. Mexico City's media influence in the entire spanish speaking world is actually limited to Mexico and perhaps Central America.
South America has its own Media Hubs(trust me, people in Buenos Aires, Caracas, Bogota, Lima and Santiago dont sit around waiting for MXC to tell them what the latest trends are) and Madrid's Media Machine certainly does not take its cues from Mexico City.
And as far as the Spanish Speaking Media in the US, Miami is far, FAR more infleuntial than Mexico City.

Once again, Mexico City's economic influence is really limited to Mexico and perhaps Central America. Id venture to guess that Miami is more important to the Carribean and Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires are definitely more important to South Americans than Mexico City.

Im just waiting for real, substantive proof to the contrary.

I thought Miami was...I think it has more latin american HQ's than any other city.

Mexico City - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mexico City is the most important economic hub in Latin America. The city proper (Federal District) produces 21.8% of the country's gross domestic product. According to a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Greater Mexico City (with a population of 18.3 million) had a GDP of $315 billion in 2005 (at purchasing power parity), ranking as the 8th-richest urban agglomeration in the world after the greater areas of Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Paris, London and Osaka/Kobe, and the richest in Latin America.
