Wilderness Statistics Reports
Wilderness Acreage By State (States with most acreage listed first)
But this is ONLY Wilderness lands under federal control and managed by the National Wilderness Preservation System. According to the site you linked to, that omits a LOT of land that does not fall under that very narrow band of interpretation. According to that site:
Quote:
Wilderness lands are Federal lands that have been designated as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System by Congress and are managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service and National Park Service under the Wilderness Act of 1964, and subsequent Wilderness laws. Although some states and Native American tribes have designated lands as state or tribal wilderness, these lands are not managed under the Wilderness Act and therefore do not qualify as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
This is another case of finding a narrow range of stats to back a claim that otherwise wouldn't hold water. Most of the Northeast and Midwest have not given the feds control over lands that would meet their criteria as a Wilderness site. I defy anyone to get dropped into the middle of the North Maine woods and tell me the entire State of Maine only has 19,000 acres of wilderness.

Someone stated that NY had the most wilderness land east of the Mississippi.

I knew that was false,

I wasn't going to spend an hour researching it. It was the first site that had the stats.

I have about 40,000 acres of preserve practically out my back door so i know the numbers are off.

Once again though, NY is nowhere close to tops with wilderness land east of the Mississippi.

Agreed that NY doesn't have the largest area. But the link you posted is WAY off in giving an accurate picture as well.

That being said, some of the most beautiful areas I have had the pleasure of traveling through and visiting have been in Upstate NY. Not vast wilderness, but beautiful and uncrowded for sure.

And you are dead wrong. New York has only a tiny amount of land controlled by the Federal government. The tiny bit of wilderness you quoted is probably bits and pieces like the Finger Lake National Forest. The Adirondack Preserve alone is considerably larger than the swamp you call a wilderness. Not every state needs the Feds to hold their hand and do everything for them. Try doing a little research --- like looking at a map.

NY still has nowhere near the most preserve/wilderness/welands/forest east of the Mississippi.

Ga,AL,FL,MS all have more. I may have missed a couple.
