"NCAA Basketball powerhouses in the South with a large fan base"

Most of the teams listed are perennial top 25 teams and/or have multiple Final Four appearances or NCAA National Championships. Whether you want to label them as powerhouses is up to you...I chose to do so. Whatever you call them, they (among others) have large followings and attract huge numbers of spectators...which was actually the point of my post.

You could've made your point without including the would 'powerhouses'...

Funny how rather than stating what they think their local sports culture is some here feel they have to justify that culture in pedantic and boring detail.

Well you know the pupose spectator sports fill; to give the average guy something to be an expert about.

If it bores you to read supporting details for statements made in my earlier posts, then don't read them.

In Texas, High School football and the Dallas Cowboys seem to be a religion.

In California, extreme sports are super popular (I do miss that). Skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, etc.

Florida is a unique case with sports. But if I had to pick, college football takes the cake. Florida has three traditional powerhouse schools (UF, FSU, Miami) a budding program (USF) and several other Division I programs on the rise (UCF, FIU, FAU) and several other FCS schools, including a big HBCU rivalry between FAMU and Bethune-Cookman.

Golf is second. Florida calls itself "Golf Capital of the World", not to mention Tiger Woods lives in Orlando.

High school and Pro football are third. A lot of teams and a lot of talent with high school, and a lot of teams and not so much talent with pro.

Basketball, baseball and hockey all have unreliable fan bases. The Magic and Heat are only popular when they're good, ditto the Rays, the Marlins are in trouble and as for the Lightning and the Panthers.... I'm suprised that hockey teams that consistently bad have managed to survive in the South for as long as they have. The Gulf Coast seems to have a bit more of a stable fan base than the Atlantic Coast does.

NASCAR is popular as well here.

Native Southerner here, HUGE NHL fan, and yes, there are more like me here, and it's not just the transplants.

Oh yeah, and I'm not a NASCAR fan.

North Carolina lives and breaths the college sports, especially College Basketball, the history here is quite rich.

Oh I know you're not alone in being a Southern NHL fan. I was born in Texas and played hockey when I lived up in Michigan.

But you have to admit that the Canes and the Dallas Stars have done a much better job adjusting to the local environment and attracting fans than any of the other teams in the South have. Especially the Thrashers..... they've done a terrible job in Atlanta....
