Some states have a well earned reputation for natural beauty - California, for instance. Other states are reputed as being boring or ugly.
Which state(s) has an unearned reputation for having a boring/ ugly landscape?
My vote would go to South Dakota. Most people think it is all flat grasslands but its Black Hills and Badlands are some of the most scenic places in the US.
Of all the states I've visited, my vote, too, would go to western South Dakota, in the Badlands region, as well. The Sandhills of Nebraska, just south, would garner some sort of honorable mention.
There isn't a state that doesn't have some kind of boring scenery. Not a one. All of the states that are lauded for their beautiful scenery, also possess boring scenery - it's just not usually talked about.
Arkansas...from Little Rock going NW, due West, or SW is very nice. Lots of mountains, hills, greenery, etc. The cleanest River in the USA is in Arkansas...I think its called the Buffalo but I cannot remember for sure. I saw a special about it this past Summer. It also has zero dams on the river and they credit that free flow for keeping it very clean. I'm not the canoeing type or anything that outdoorsy, but it made me want to go float down the river and see the sights...it was incredibly beautiful and loads of geologic features, which I am into.
The eastern half of Arkansas is pretty much flatland for growing crops, although Crowley's Ridge does popup and geologists cannot agree why its there. Its called the "Delta" or "The Mississippi Embayment"..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_embayment
