Probably has to do with the tv show.

Actually when I am abroad, I say "Dallas" first - being the proud native. I don't remember meeting anyone who was unfamiliar with Big D.

Once a cab driver in Paris said "Waalker, Texass Raaaaaanger" in the way only a Frenchman could...

Dang! That's a good one!

I remember a song by Tanya Tucker from way back...

"When I die, I may not go to heaven,
'cause I don't know if they let cowboys in.
But if I don't, just let me go to Texas,
'cause Texas is a close as I've been."

OK this ties cities together. Marvin Zindler (the real reporter) was in Houston and the chicken ranch was near La Grange - after the musical and movie it was moved to Dallas on Greenville Avenue and opened as a restaurant/bar.

I bet Corpus Christi is even less well known. I bet if you mention El Paso to someone, they'll think of the salsa or something crazy like that before they think of the city itself.

Corpus Christi has a much smaller population than those other large metros, including El Paso, so I could see why Corpus would be less known/talked about. Same with Brownsville, Laredo or Amarillo.

My order:
Dallas
Houston
Fort Worth
San Antonio
Austin
Corpus Christi
El Paso
Galveston
Abeline
Amarillo
Waco
Brownsville
Laredo
Beaumont
etc...
