I'm far more familiar with the South and its cuisine that I ever wanted or hoped to be. Southern cooking isn't my thing at all. Give me New York or San Francisco for food any day of the week.
Yeah, but a lot of food from those places are not original. Yet, inspired. While "southern" cooking is one of the official cuisines of the United States. All original.

Houston has more of a variety of restaurants/culture due to its size. Portland has a good share of restaurants as well and some great vegan, Thai and chinese. One plus for Portland is everything is close together and the public transit is excellent. Still, Houston has some good southern cooking, I like Buttermilk Bisquits and French Toast

If you haven't found one then you're not looking because they come a dime a dozen in this state.

All you have to do is open your eyes. Houston's full of them.

Oh, well maybe it's just me, but I've never been to a Chinese restaurant where the food wasn't "GOOOOOOD".
