The water and atmosphere in Miami Beach is better though.
pretty much what I said, more laid back, relax=people from city-data wanting to live there.
more chaotic, hectic, exciting=city-data posters wanting to visit and have prefference but not to live.
I don't agree with the part of your statement I bolded above. There may not be bars within 20 feet of the ocean but THERE ARE PLENTY of BARS/RESTAURANTS within EASY WALKING DISTANCE of the BEACH in Santa Monica. A couple of good ones directly on the PIER too.
Miami Beach is 18.7 square miles, pop. density is 12,500 persons per sq mile.
Santa Monica is 15.9 square miles, pop. density is 10,500 persons per square mile.
I think both a quite walkable but perhaps given that MB is a peninsula there is a greater concentration of activity in SoBeach making easier to go from place to place.
OK. But if you want to walk around Santa Monica you've got to climb up the palisade except in Santa Monica canyon. Does Santa Monica extend to Malibu? It is an easy walk from the beach to Santa Monica college\ Lincoln. The strand\ pier doesn't come close to the excitement of Ocean Ave in Miami Beach at night. It's wall to wall restaurants & places with live music in South Beach. Sort of like Sunset Strip. It is the night club center for all of Miami including Coconut Grove.

I think that Miami Beach (South Beach in particular) is more like mixing West Hollywood and Santa Monica.
I am sort of surprised that Santa Monica seems to be favored over Miami Beach but that may have more to do with Los Angeles compared to Miami [no comparison]. What I especially like about Miami Beach is how everything is close to the beach whereas Santa Monica requires a car more often if you want to go out to dinner\ night clubs. There are not any bars within 20 feet of the beach in Santa Monica [I think] but the night life along Ocean street in MB is alive with girls!!
That may be VERY true. LA might be a more desirable city then Miami. There is more to do in Los Angeles(OVERALL) then Miami.

Yes, it could be people are factoring in LA into the equation....or there are just more people in Calif. so SM is winning. Got to take these polls with a grain of salt.
I will say this for Santa Monica...it has quite a high octane economy for such a small city:
Santa Monica is home many notable businesses, including Lions Gates Films and the Rand Corporation (where nobel prize economists are based). SM is also the regional headquarters for Yahoo, Google, MTV, and Microsoft. Also, Santa Monica is a major location for video game development industry with design studios for Activision, HighImpact Games, and Insommiac Games.
Miami Beach clearly wins the battle of the beach.....
Very true.
