I think that Miami Beach (South Beach in particular) is more like mixing West Hollywood and Santa Monica.
YES, YES, YES, VERY true. Miami Beach is the Hollywood of SoFla, mixed with Santa Monica. Just like Hollywood, Miami Beach has, clubs, the stars, and the same type of shopping. But because it's on the coast it has the Santa Monica FEEL.

It's wall to wall restaurants & places with live music in South Beach. Sort of like Sunset Strip. It is the night club center for all of Miami including Coconut Grove.
CalifoniaSur: I hear you. Let's face it...in terms of nightlife Santa Monica is NOT at the TOP of the LA food chain. Best night life in LA is Hollywood and/or Downtown LA (yes, I said Downtown LA). So I agree with you on that point. The Sunset Strip on the ocean would be VERY cool!!
Santa Monica's borders do NOT go all way to Malibu....the northern border stops around San Vicente Blvd...where the Pacific Palisades (a part of the City of LA) begins. The SOUTHERN portion of Santa Monica is the MOST walkable where dowtown Santa Monica runs into Venice Beach. This area is VERY walkable with bars, restaurants, hotels, etc.

My biggest two complaints about BOTH places are climate/water oriented:
Santa Monica:
1. Cold ocean water.
2. Too much fog in Spring (and "cold" beach days when it SHOULD be warm)
Miami Beach:
1. That Humidity for 6 months of the year is VERY UNPLEASANT.
2. The fantastic water/ocean is in a sense WASTED becuase there is NO SURF.
I know that point #2 for MB may be lost on quite a few Floridians but when you grow up in area with waves you realize how much MORE ENJOYABLE being at the beach is when there are waves, even for little kids. You do NOT have to SURF to have fun in waves, even just body surfing.
IF Miami Beach had REAL WAVES...like Hawaii or Brazil or California it would be off the hook, out of this world GOOD. But no place has it all. I still give Miami Beach the win in the battle of the beach....

Totally agree. Swimming in the Atlantic is like swimming in a lake. It is very comfortable but body surfing is pretty lame & board surfing is impossible. There's certainly nothing like the "wedge" in Newport Beach anywhere in the U.S. outside Hawaii. The reason I can stay in the chilly Pacific as long as I do [often several hours] is the waves are just too exciting. I've swam off Laguna beach and ended up a mile from where I started because of the current and great waves. But there isn't the clear water like off Florida except maybe in places like Catalina island [mainly the west side]. Too much pollution esp during winter!

I wish the beaches of Cali and the beaches of Florida can come together and form ONE beach. That would be awesome. There would be ALOT of food options, shopping, clubs, WAVES, surfing, warm water, Hills, palisades, PLENTY of girls, PLENTY of Latina girls, parties, it would literally be PARADISE.
