The redbirds were cool, and call me crazy, but I actually liked when New York trains had graffiti on them, some of the artwork was impressive and it gave them a gritty look.

one of the illest subway cars to ever run through the tunnels in nyc has to be:

YouTube - Far Rockaway Bound R40 Slant A Train @ 14th Street

but by far the coolest sounding IMO is:

YouTube - 95th Street Bound R46 R Train @ 49th Street

what about the dc metro appeals to ppl, aesthetically?? just curious because its winning the thread...

i dunno, there is nothing about any system listed that aesthetically pleases me. i have to agree with the poster above me. london, paris, berlin, tokyo, rome (heh...graffiti lovers unite), germany, um...australia, etc. have waaaay better subways when it comes to look.

as far as the best looking subway in america...eh...they mostly all look like variants of what we have in nyc and thats a bad thing IMO. we have to have the most plain trains on the planet. our trains from the past are way better looking. *sigh*

the outside is a variant of the nyc subway tho...
and the inside (with the seats with cushions) has been done before by ny as well.

to me, the best looking cars need to be aesthetically pleasing from the outside more than the inside. thats just my opinion, tho...

when it was done in nyc:

and:

but the best exterior and interior of all time goes to when the trains in ny looked like:

the only cool looking train left in our system is:

YouTube - EXCLUSIVE! : Forest Hills - 71st Ave Bound R32 V Train @ Broadway Lafayette Street

IMO.
