You are right about race car tracks high school football in the city and I think Rutgers is the best college football team in the area. Nothing that amazing but they are not bad. And no city has 4 corners style landscape.

Some of the best Mexican food in the country is found in Red Hook and is just as authentic as any Mexican making Mexican food anywhere else in the country. I believe there is a Mexican festival in Red Hook. There are even taco trucks in the city.

If you extended to just the city outside city limits, there is Vegas stye gambling there at Empire City Casino in Yonkers. Other than that you will have to head to Connecticut or New Jersey or Long Island. Or just use the one with real money called Wall Street. Bet on horse racing too. When you want to talk gambling there is no place with as diversified of a "gambling" industry as NY that is just how it is.

Some of the things mentioned in this thread are simply from lack of knowledge. NYC is a monstrous place unlike any other in the U.S. Anyone can be surprised by the things that can be found in the city and its adjoining metro area.

You wouldn't want to live in a waterstudio on the East River, you'd have bloated, dead bodies, floating past your window.

We live on an island, and it's the north. My husband and daughter went flounder fishing all the time.
