Sweet Moses, one of the food destinations in Gordon Square and a favorite of Clevelanders seeking an old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience, has permanently closed.

Mazzone & Sons Bakery also closed this spring after 80 years. The bakery was a supplier to Galucci's Italian market.

The loss of the Mazzone Bakery further diminishes Cleveland's ethnic culinary tradition as the COVID epidemic shut down Polish American cafeteria Sokolowski's University Inn and even the mod ethnic destination Lola Bistro on East 4th Street downtown. Both Sokolowski's and Lola were highly acclaimed nationally.

The Balaton, Ohio's leading Hungarian restaurant and an anchor of Shaker Square, has hung even though with much reduced hours.

Schnitz Ale Brewery nears opening in Parma: First look

The pics here look really nice and the location across the street from Das Schnitzel Haus is really a great compliment to the area. It's about time to see Parma get some potential destinations that could draw others in.

Default Choolaah, CoreLife, and REBol chains

See posts 25 to 31 in this thread regarding three new restaurant concepts in Greater Cleveland. Choolaah, a fast casual Indian food chain, and REBol, a organic and non-GMO wellness food chain, reportedly are headquartered in Cleveland.

Default Cleveland Restaurant Week Nov. 1-13

Some of these deals are better than others IMO. The Bruno's "Dinner for Two" for $48 seems attractively priced.

Default "Best of Cleveland" examines pizzerias

If you're heading to Geauga County for leaf peeping or maple sugar season, perhaps put Noce Gourmet Pizza on your itinerary.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddri...?ocid=msedgntp

Angelo's Pizza in Lakewood often tops area "best pizza" competitions. It's a favorite of Tom Hanks when revisiting his Cleveland roots.

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainm...hes-story.html

Check out Antonio's Pizza in Brunswick, also apparently to be featured in a Brew Wall opening in Broadview Heights.

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainm...-the-helm.html

Geraci's in University Heights has proven his worth by selling over a million pizzas!

note: maybe you mentioned it somewhere above (too lazy to read all the posts).

But WRnative, have you checked out (still new-ish) Saucy Brew Works over at W.29 & Detroit? (Hingetown/Ohio City - right next to the new Church & State mixed-use apt high rise -- really exciting/growing area)... The joint's name is a bit of a misnomer: yes, it is a microbrewery, but really pizza is their specialty and is practically the only food on the menu; and they are VERY good at cooking it. (yeah, I get it, but still who really knows the 'saucy' represents pizza esp if you're new to the area?).... SBW has some of the best thin-sliced pizza in the area and its quick, right-out-of-the-oven made-to-order. Cool atmosphere, too, with lots of sports TVs and tons of outdoor seating... If not, check it out.

The frustrating thing about Balaton is that, even though with 90k in donations, it can't seem to keep up with the times. It doesn't have online ordering, doesn't deliver, and you basically have to call 8 hours ahead to get takeout.

Asian restaurants in the city have NO problem with these basic concepts, and many of their kitchens are tiny. I know their food, as I come from the same region of Europe, and Tocana (Chicken Paprikash) does take 4-6 hours on the stove (unlike many stir fry Asian dishes). But it seems to me something is off....I, for one, don't order from them nearly as I'd like (given their Tocana is a dead ringer for my late Buni's Sunday dinner) simply because it's too darn inconvenient. And I'm not the only one in my town who feels this way.

And if you read their website, it looks like they are considering moving. It would be a HUGE loss to Shaker Square as it's an anchor tenant. But if their hints are correct, and they are considering partnering with the Edwin's mini-empire, that wouldn't be the worst thing.

Default Balaton to close Shaker Square location by end of January

Anyone hoping to dine at the Balaton on Shaker Square for the first, or last time, should do so soon. The restaurant will close its Shaker Square location by the end of January, but hopes to find another location further east. Of course, there always a possibility that it will close and never reopen....

https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and...-new-location?

There's also the possibility that when it reopens, it may not be successful in its new location.

I hope the Balaton owners aren't miscalculating. I wonder what percentage of the Balaton clientele arrives there on the Blue or Green Line from downtown. Of course, with the Cleveland convention business depressed, this past source of business may be nonexistent now and for the near future.

Great memories. It joins Kiefer's on Detroit Ave. as the two restaurants that I most miss, with many fond memories of dining adventures with individuals no longer in my life. Sokolowski's is a distant third on that list. Where on the east side will I go for veal Wiener Schnitzel if the Balaton isn't able to reestablish itself?

https://clevelandhistorical.org/items/show/913

Much bigger loss to me than the "Indians."

Unfortunately, my new restaurant explorations have been nonexistent during the COVID epidemic, and breweries no longer are a magnet for me. It sounds fantastic, however. Added to my bucket list. Thanks!

Default Highest-rated cheap eats in Cuyahoga County

The following article is based on tripadvisor.com ratings of "cheap eats." Scanning the list, all of the restaurants are in Cuyahoga County, apparently including all restaurants that use "Cleveland" in their address even when located in a different community. Although there are many such lists, based on my personal experience and knowledge, this is an excellent list. It includes a few restaurants that are part of small chains (such as Swenson's, Yours Truly, Barrio, and Panini's).

https://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddri...ocid=windirect

The list includes several of my favorites in the top 10, including Superior Pho, Yours Truly, West Side Market Cafe, Happy Dog and Barrio. As discussed in this forum elsewhere, Yours Truly definitely is a relatively cheap dining option when visiting Playhouse Square.

Click on "cheap eats" in the left margin here to use this filter at any time to order tripadvisor.com restaurant reviews. The link provides the actual reviews of the restaurants in the above article.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...land_Ohio.html

One weakness of tripadvisor.com is that you can't search for individual counties, let alone a metropolitan area. You can search for "cheap eats" in additional cities. E.g., here are "cheap eats" lists for Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, and Mentor (as a proxy for Lake County), communities with many restaurants. Tripadvisor.com ratings definitely include nearby restaurants in other communities; the Lakewood list includes several restaurants in Cleveland.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...wood_Ohio.html

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...ghts_Ohio.html

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...unty_Ohio.html

Several of the above restaurants belong on any list of cheap eats in Cuyahoga County, such as the legendary Tick Tock Tavern in Lakewood.

Interestingly, the highly deserving Presti's located in Little Italy tops the Cleveland Heights "cheap eats" list but isn't included in the Cleveland list.
