The city council has appointed councilman David Ham as the new mayor. He will serve the remainder of Chuck Allen's term, which ends in November 2023.

NCDOT has awarded a contract to resurface US-117 between the US-70 interchange and the Duplin County line. The project also includes widening the shoulders to interstate standards between the recently-built O'Berry Road and Country Club Road interchanges, which is part of the Future I-795 corridor.

Work can start after Sept. 27, and is expected to be complete by fall 2022.
