On the undergrad level....it's not unrealistic to compare ECU to Western. They have similar acceptance rates (75-80%) and are both known as "safety-net" schools for most high school seniors in most large NC high-schools....basically they're considered party schools and have a fairly high freshman dropout rate.
The difference comes in post-grad. ECU has a Medical School, Dental School, MBA, MEd, and other respected Masters and Doctoral programs and is the third largest in research funding and spending in NC (granted it's a distant third from NC State, which is a distant 2nd from UNC....but then it really really drops off after ECU)
ECU and Western are completely different types of Universities. ECU is a national, Western is a regional. ECU has over 22K, Western has under 9K.
Actually Western's acceptance rate is about 46%, where ECU's is about 75%. If Western is enrolling 1500 freshmen and ECU is enrolling 5,000...that means ECU and Western are denying about the same amount of applications.
What really separates the two is the locations...Greenville is a college city of close to 100K, whereas Cullowhee is about 10K people (and the college is 9K).
Schools like UNCW and Western are essentially artificially raising their academic rep because they are limiting their size (as the North Carolina population continues to grow)...whereas ECU see's its role as actually educating more people and continues to grow in size.
Are the people at ECU generally rude? Was browsing an ECU forum and the members seemed rude, calling posters idiots, stupid, etc.
Well, I never went to ECU myself but I know a good friend of mine that did a few years ago (who went on to become a teacher in Wayne County) and he never had a problem, so take it for what it's worth. No matter where you go, there's gonna be a few assh@les in every woodpile that try to ruin it for everyone else, but there's also a lot good people so if going to ECU is something you want to do, I say go for it. Also, Greenville's crime rate is a bit on the high side but it's not Rocky Mount or Kinston. Those two places are toast. Greenville has good and bad areas and I'm sure the other posters on here that are a lot more familiar with Greenville than I am will help you out with finding a good spot should you choose to move there. Bottom line, visit Greenville and the ECU campus first to get a feel for the area and to see if it's where you really want to go and then make your decision.
The crime is not really something I'd worry about. It is not as bad as it was a few years ago. Don't do stupid things and you'll be fine. If you walk around alone at 3 in the morning, you will probably get what's coming to you. That's the case in a lot of places though.
