At that price point I would recommend the Asus RT-N66U. A great router with plenty of features. If you could afford to spend a little more, I would go with the Asus RT-AC66U or AC68U. That will get you the new AC standard and help future proof.

One level home.

The flaky part is that it does not want to talk to my cable modem any more.
I am having trouble with both direct and wireless connections like the "saved, secured" message on my Galaxy S4 and no internet access at all with wired devices like the blu ray player, playstation and desktop. If I unplug them both for 40s and boot them up I might get them to cooperate for about an hour or so before dropping. Charter insists their modem is fine and I believe them.

I like the idea of a more professional style seperate router and access point setup but I dont want to invest that much since I dont trust the 3400 any more. Ill look into the asus.

Thanks for all the replies.

My trusty/dusty old WRT54G started misbehaving yesterday, while two work related calls were taking place through it. Can't have that.

Picked up a Netgear R6300v2 and so far, I'm impressed. Range is much better on the 2.4GHz band, and speed is better also. It's only been in place for about 12 hours, so I can't comment on reliability yet, but the reviews on Amazon are generally positive. I use wireless "routers" as access points only. For actual routing, I use a different device, so I can't comment directly on the actual routing performance.

I feel like I want to step away from Netgear this time around or I would give it a try. Right now im trying to figure out the difference between an Asus RT-N66R and the RT-N66U.

edit:looks like it is just one of those, this one is sold at best buy and this is sold at the independant nerd shops sort of thing...

Do you guys with ASUS routers use the stock firmware or an alternate? I've been using Asuswrt-Merlin for a while now and I'm more than happy with it.

Still using the stock firmware. Have considered Merlin's, or even switching to dd-wrt or tomato, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The WRT54G seems to come up in just about every router thread. Good news, you can now buy Linksys' replacement for it, for the miserly sum of only $300

The last router I configured through a serial port was a cisco 2621. I much prefer doing it over the network - it's a pain in the arse to locate or build a serial cable to use one time for 20 minutes...

The "routers" I'm using at home and at the office are just linux systems. Way more functionality than any off-the-shelf router, even those running 3rd party firmware, and any old/obsolete (for windows) PC can do the job. The one at the office is also running our PBX, several monitoring tools and some other odds and ends, and it's being done with a 6 watt mini PC that's bolted to the back of the monitor I have in the rack.
