I heard on the train from one of the conductors that it's been stopped indefinitely for environmental reasons. Anyone know about this?

This is not true. The new Fairfield station is really three different projects. The station itself (platforms, drop off, pedestrian and vehicular bridges over tracks) is being built by the state. The off-site roadway improvements for roads leading to the station are being built by the town. And the commuter parking lot and access road south of the tracks was to be built by the town in conjunction with the private developer.

The state began work on the station itself a couple of years ago and the contractor built it very fast and is well ahead of schedule. The town began construction of the off site improvements eariler this year and they are moving along on schedule. The private developer however got caught in the economy downturn (thanks to the Fairfield Conservation Commission staff taking a year to review very minor changes to the project). The state eventually came up with more money and now construction of this portion of the project is going full blast. The state is now finishing up the last work on the station and will be well ahead of everything else. It was hoped that the station would open in the spring but no schedule has been set yet on it. That does not look likely but next summer looks very good. Jay

I know - I'm so sorry! It may be the worst-worded title I've ever written.
