Posted about the Tsunami this morning in the weather forum. lol. //www.city-data.com/forum/weath...****-june.html

I dont think it was the Derecho but havent read all the details and thoughts. There was a 2.9 earthquake in NJ and there was a major 6.4 earthquake in the Atlantic yesterday. So maybe the shelfs are moving a bit on the East coast.

No doubt there are several metros that have never seen 100 F temps. Compared to the tropics, middle latitude temperate climates (like ours) and even subtropical climates (Brisbane, New Orleans , Southern China…ect) see 100’s and even 90’s far more often. There is this myth that pervades that true tropical climates (USVI, Key West, Kingston, …etc) have hot daily highs ( 90's and 100's F), when many locations between 0 and 23 North have daily highs in the 80’s in the warmest months.

No doubt the tropics see high dew points much more often than the Tri-State/Mid Atlantic. My point was there are periods times when the East Coast (north of subtropical Florida) has similar weather conditions to the true tropics. It is kind of fun to see similar temps/RH/Dew points …etc from the Caribbean Sea right up the East Coast to NYC/Connecticut.

Hong Kong is considered a subtropical climate from the way I understated it. Climates are considered tropical when they have a mean temp of 18 C (64.5 F) or higher in the coldest month. Hong Kong falls below that in Jan/Feb:

If the Wikipedia entry is correct, looks like Hong Kong has never reached 100-deg either (nor averages a high of 90 in every month). I wonder given it's latitude if the fact that it's surrounded by higher terrain cools it just enough in winter to be subtropical......it is a little cooler than Miami in winter, I see.

Yesterday's high at BDL tied a record, by the way. I can attest that today was truly, truly miserable...A/C running all day, barely able to keep up. Need a break soon.

I agree. Thanks for the reminder. Temps werent that impressive for widespread records. In fact these are the only ones for entire Northeast north of North Carolina.

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 94 DEGREES WAS SET AT HARTFORD CT YESTERDAY JUNE 24, 2013.. THIS TIES THE OLD RECORD OF 94 SET IN 1975.

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 95 DEGREES WAS SET AT BOSTON MA YESTERDAY JUNE 24, 2013. THIS TIES THE OLD RECORD OF 95 SET IN 1976.

A MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 94 DEGREES WAS RECORDED AT BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TODAY JUNE 25, 2013. THIS TIES THE OLD RECORD OF 94 DEGREES SET IN 1975.

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 96 DEGREES WAS SET AT LAGUARDIA NY TODAY JUNE 25, 2013. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 95 SET IN 2010.

Yesterdays max temps got updated for a few sites..

Here's a look at the heat waves of 2013. The only site officially had a heat wave is BDL this time and BDL HFD last time.. But it seems like the first hot days were hotter. Averages were lower then too.

I think the dewpoints this time made it feel worse.

BDR only once hitting 90 this month
BDL 4 times

Sorted by highest temp for each day

Nice graphic.

I can attest to the hot temps in New Haven yesterday, with the dew points/RH it really felt like it was 100 F.

As we look ahead at the forecast (it it all pans out), it doesn't look like a good one foe those who hate tropical, humid conditions with high dew points. With the trough axis WEST of the Appalachians, the upper-level flow will be from the southwest along the Eastern Seaboard, and with that Bermuda High not budging off the East Coast, a corridor of moisture will be established from the tropics right up the East Coast. That will keep the humidity/dew points very high, and allow for multiple showers and thunderstorms each day. Get those gutter cleaned out for the tropical downpours and keep the AC ship - shape - lol.

So get ready for a little taste of what the southwest monsoon in India feels like in the coming days/weekend - lol:
