Shelton's dropout rate is about 10% higher than the state average. That's not good.
What on earth is causing that??

I really don't know. They only had an 84% graduation rate in 2008-09 as well (district wide).

I just found it surprising because it seemed to be accepted around here that their high school was superior to my local high school, Foran. Yet Foran has a 95% graduation rate as of 2009-2010, same as Newtown. And half the disciplinary actions as Shelton, though I do wonder the accuracy of reporting with those statewide.

Since they are usually suspensions and expulsions, I don't think schools can sweep them under the rug.

But the percentage of the student body involved (19%) is pretty high IMO.

Correlates closely to the graduation rate too. Not to sound elitist or discriminatory, but I'd bet a lot come from a certain area of town that's more densely populated. And might gentrify in the next 5-10 years.

Oh absolutely. Same with Shelton, too. Guaranteed 90% of the troublemakers come from the Howe Ave/downtown area. And Branford (Montoya apartments).

Probably late on this one, but if Shelton doesn't have an alternative school or summer school program that explains the high drop out rate. Not sure if they have either though.

As for the teacher that won't send his kids to the school system he teaches in, I've always found that phenomenon strange…as if you don't believe in your own work. I've had plenty of teachers myself who had their kids in private schools and they were not the best teachers I had. I get it if there is something about your kid that you think the school won't work. But to flat out refuse…that's weird.

ETA: Just re-read that and see what you were saying. And I still think it's strange if someone is good enough to move into a community, but too good to use the school system. Sure you can put your kid in that particular school you work at, but unless you're willing to only sleep in the town you live in and spend every waking moment in the town they go to school, you're child won't have much of a life. A friend of our's commuted daily with her kids from Naugatuck to mom's work place at Ridgefield High School (ridiculous right there). She had tired kids who felt friendless both at RHS and back home.

A colleague's parents both work in Milford schools as teachers and sent both him and his sister to public. His dad is a revered teacher at Foran.

Guessing you mean "private". Either way, unless there's something regarding the kid that he won't do well in the public school, I still find it rather hypocritical. The kids at Foran are good enough to make a paycheck off of, but not good enough to be around his kids? I realize that statement might be a jump, but again I just don't get it. I'm probably idealistic in that I believe schools reflect communities and vice versa.
