Ugh, $55 million in public funding. I live near the Xl Center and it brings business to the city, no doubt, when there are events. However, just about every concert bypasses the XL Center for Mohegan Sun Arena. It’s all Wolfpack games, UConn basketball, and UConn hockey that draw crowds in to the XL these days. Once in a while you get Disney on Ice or a monster truck event but there isn’t a whole lot else there. I’m not sure if it will ever be what they want it to be. Not for $55 million of public funds.

Didn't they spend over 30 million on upgrades in 2014?

Agreed. Not a particularly good investment. Both Stamford and New Haven are able to thrive without a sports arena.

It's a great start. I haven't been back to the old Civic Center in decades. Wonderful memories from the Whalers, Hellcats, to Motley Crue. Terrific news for the city.

You forget that the Webster Arena in Bridgeport is just 20 miles from New Haven and 23 miles from Stamford. If you look, most major cities have an arena venue. Hartford should be no different. Jay

Hartford has been a wishful holdout for an NHL team several times in the past decade or so. For AHL hockey a 7,000 seat or so arena is a better set up. That is not the case for large basketball tournaments or larger events. It's all about identity. What does the XL Center want to be? Hartford could support an NHL team and would certainly have better attendance than the Panthers, Islanders, or Senators. The Yard Goats are a prime example of the attraction of a good venue. The XL Center is a piece of an overall strategic plan. The UConn campus, new housing being developed downtown, and the movement of more young people into the Hartford workforce are the contributing factors that help bring it altogether.

Not sure what an arena 20 miles away in Bridgeport does for Stamford and New Haven. Its certainly not doing much for Bridgeport vis a vis those two cities. And lets not forget that New Haven had an arena and demolished it rather than continuing to pump money into it.

An arena is a "nice to have", not a "must have".

Exactly. As if the Bridgeport arena has anything at all to do with the growth and success of Stamford and New Haven.

An arena brings sports and large scale shows to the region. That is important for any city to have. Since ZNew Haven and Stamford are so close to Bridgeport, there is no reason for them to have their own. You may not attend events at these types of facilities but thousands of people do. Most major cities have them. In fact Richmond is considering building a new one right now.

The New Haven Colosseum had severe structural issues that needed to be addressed. The parking garage for it was above the arena and had to be closed because of deterioration. With the opening of the Webster Arena in Bridgeport and faced with millions in repairs needed, it made financial sense for the city to just demolish the building. The city also thought the property would be redeveloped quickly but here we are more than a decade later and nothing has been built there. Jay
