Still neither did what was needed. In fact Rell borrowed money to fund a deficit. Is that responsible economics? Just like the current Federal tax cuts, it is not. Just puts off the problems for future generations to deal with. Jay

A GOP gov with a Democratic state house does not change what is possible to accomplish.

We need reduced Ct state spending, in REAL dollars, not as a reduction in the rate of increase.
We need a Big Time State and local government RIF plan.
We need a one term gov, so they are not blinded by personal ambition.

I think everyone agrees we need cuts, BobNJ. What no one seems to agree upon is where to cut....

Where would you cut?

But as Governor they can certainly steer things in the right direction. They did not. They did not propose budgets that fixed things. They did fight to fix things. And they did not stand up for what should have been done. That is why I do not buy it when someone blames the Democrats for our problems. Yes, they are to blame for most of it but the Republicans are not without blame either. Jay

It’s true that Republican governors don’t have the best track record.

Everything not safety related. No cuts to LEOs, EMTs, etc.

Cut for the most part state staffing that is administrative above the level directly serving public. There are far too many layers of mgmt. in government. Cut any infrastructure spending that is a "nice to have" vs a "need to have". That includes stuff like state parks.

Treat it like a household budget in crisis-or as my fav CFO used to say :If it does not increase revenue or cut future costs, do not spend on it".

The largest demographic that votes Republican have been in large droves. Minorities that overwhelmingly vote Democratic have increased in population while the state loses population due to whites moving out. It's going to be close. It depends on who shows up on Election Day. That's why Malloy kept Hartford voting booths open for as long as possible when they crashed in the morning because he knows their vote bumps him to first place.

Or, you know, the fact that voting is a right afforded to most Americans?

A lot of people were unable to vote in the morning when those machines crashed. If all the machines in Litchfield County crashed, wouldn't everyone get up in arms if they were down for a couple of hours, thousands of people couldn't vote, and the polls still closed normal times?

Republicans will lose if they nominate another Tom Foley, or some right-wing guy who emulates the President or echos his rhetoric. That message does not work outside of the Naugatuck Valley or east of the River, and you'll see a tidal wave of support for the Democrat, like you did for Clinton.

There are very few actually good Republicans running, and currently there's zero good Democrats officially running.

I'm sure there might be some vague truth to this but I doubt its enough to make any difference. CT is 78% white and has hovered around there for a number of years. I'm white and have voted D plenty of times because Local Republicans have too often been swept away by National rhetoric and nominated some crazy zealot. Or worse some boring old rich white guy.... maybe a less myopic choice would encourage more votes? We're a VERY smart state but we're also complacent ....we shall sustain lol
