The AmicaMutualDome, why not. They could put a Sallys and Pepes in there too. Just don't put a Chick-Fil A like the Falcons new dome in Atlanta. They're closed Sundays. Great move

Except the casino site is not flat and not very conducive to a sports facility. Jay

The XL Center site is not big enough for a stadium. The Connecticut Convention Center, which is where Patriot’s stadium was originally proposed, is twice the size and it was barely big enough. Heck they barely had enough room for the arena there. Jay

They could do pro soccer, no one cares.
Pro soccer is gate dependent, so we can't do that one, either, as we would need sellouts week in, week out. Its the type of sport that must thread the needle, financially, w/o much tv revenue, if any.

I agree with you on the Big 4. Whalers were our last team. We are not on any Big 4 leagues radar for relocating teams or possible new franchises. The short list each maintains when expecting relos or new teams is the first step to getting a team.

The main issue in my view is the nearness to Boston and NYC. Without it, Hartford as a standalone metro is a similar sized market to places like Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and (ironically) Buffalo, though like Hartford, none of those 3 areas are really growing, in fact until recently they were all shrinking and Hartford is growing more than all three of them (and Hartford is unique compared to those 3 in that a much larger share of their market is suburbia, though maybe that would be a good thing had their geography been different).

In hockey, Winnipeg is technically a smaller market than Hartford, but I assume the criteria for a Canada-based team is different.

Wasn't there a horse years ago to get more soccer in the area maybe like a different League. I would have thought that the number of Latin Americans would tend to make me think that there'd be a higher attendance for soccer in the region. I would love to see some type of soccer bar open up

The Patriots were less popular when they tried to move probably less popular than the bills are now. Why would you move to stagnant Hartford when Booming Austin exists.

By NFL rules, CT is within the NYG AND NYJ immediate TV market. As I understand it, back in the 1990s when deciding on expansion, the NFL identifies a 4 hour driving radius basically that of that team, maybe 3hours. If so, then that team nearest has right of first refusal. Charlotte is 4 hours drive time from Atlanta, and I don't recall them objecting. But the Bills to Austin, TX certainly falls in the Houston TX viewing area as its a 2 1/2 drive. Its 3 hours Austin to Houston. Plus, the NFL looks at demographics, i.e. money/big corporations for potential sponsorships. Because NE, NYG and NYJ are long established teams with good fan bases, I doubt much is left in that area who would become sponsors. Austin (and really San Antonio, 75 miles south) represents 4.5 million people. If you stretch the viewing area south and west, you could add another 2 million people. There's not another market of that size with some large corporations and high income available in the U.S. for Football or MLB. Its like having two Portland, OR markets.

There are leagues under MLS that currently have teams in the Hartford area:

USL Championship 2nd Division has Hartford Athletic which plays at Dillon Stadium. Their team color are blue and green like the Whalers and Brass Bonanza is part of their goal celebration.

USL2 4th Division has AC Connecticut that also plays at Dillion Stadium. The team is pre-professional that allows amateurs to compete without hurting their college eligibility.

NPSL 4th Division has Hartford City FA and they play at U Hartford. Again, pre-professional like ACC.

Hartford might be able to support an MLS team but an owner willing to lose money is needed. MLS ownership is boasting one owns a professional team, not making money off it.

You know, since I keep using baseball as a comparison, is Hartford the largest US market to have a AA-level minor league team? (And as such maybe the largest one to NOT have a AAA-level team? Since I've compared it in metro size to Buffalo, Milwaukee and Cincinnati and Buffalo has a AAA team (and the largest stadium in minor league baseball) and the latter two are in the majors)
