I'd stay on the Island. The fireworks only last 15 mins. or so and you can always drive over here to see them. I don't know much about the hotels themselves.

It all depends on your preferences. I'm not a big beach fan, I like to visit various coastal attractions ranging from Rockport to Kingsville, so the Omni Corpus works for me. The Holiday Inn is good, I've stayed there after a few Bike To The Beach rides, but other than hanging out on the beach or fishing at the nearby jetty, there isn't much to do. Johnny D's seafood is close by, and probably the best seafood restaurant in the CC area, but there are few options outside of that for cuisine or night life.

I used to work a 2nd job @ Sun Spree. It's a modest hotel but don't let the location fool you. It's pretty much on par with your basic hotel but just happens to be on the island. It's probably a good 6.5/10. You'll enjoy it but don't go looking for luxurious.

But stay on the island. Don't mess with the beaches in the city, the bay is like a cesspool.
