Sorry, I only got through the 1st page of this thread so I don't know if this was already mentioned, but would it be clever or F'ed up if we were to get our favorite employees' Venmo (of course with their permission) and tipped via Venmo? My cruise in January is only the 2nd in my entire life and the first on NCL. I'm notorious for thinking outside the box, and that's not always a good thing. Sometimes it is though.
P.S.: The OP made thought-provoking points and they've stuck with me

Considering that I'm guessing that 90% of the general population had no idea what Venmo even is, I doubt it.
In certain situations, Cash is king. This is one of them.

Most of the employees on cruise ships are from very poor countries. They want cash tips, trust me!!

the problem with your reasoning: you are forgetting the behind the scenes crew members that would get no tips if it wasn't for the tipping pool. some of us still give a few extra bucks to our favorite cocktail wait perosn or our cabin steward. that is done in cash.
My preference would be for the fares to include paying a reasonable wage to all of the employees, rather than separating so-called "tips" so that people equate them with an optional bonus to the employees. But until that becomes the norm, I just look at the fee as part of the cost of the cruise. I tip separately in cash to specific people who I directly interact with who have gone above and beyond standard expectations.

No kidding
I was referencing "grimace8" who said to tip with Venmo. I'm assuming most of the workers would want cash tips and not a transaction that works like Pay pal!
We haven’t cruised for a long time, but we always tipped in cash at the end. I’ve heard the room stewards are not paid very much, so rely on tips.
If prepaying results in the workers getting paid fairly, then I don’t mind.
I’m sure there are people who would gladly stiff the service workers.
You can check with the front desk each day to see what you spent if you have too. Also some ships have computer terminals where you can print out your account as often as you like.
On Carnival, you can check your account on the TV in your cabin.
Yes. And the way I see it, pretty soon we wouldn't have to worry about the tipping stuff any more, because more and more places add the gratuity automatically for you, and makes it somehow MANDATORY.
In the US of course, the only developed country where the wages got stuck in a Stone Age.
