Reason: Correct title and some info
Passengers were primarily of Germans and Spanish. Plane was an Airbus A320 in the same class at a Boeing 737 and used throughout the world as a very popular short haul aircraft with a very good safety record. Plane crashed at roughly 2000 meters altitude.
The crash site is inaccessible to ground vehicles. Reports are that the plane was at a low altitude given the nature of the flight through a mountainous region.
Resources from nearby French military base enroute to crash site. German Wings is a subsidiary of Lufttanza and considered a premium low cost air carrier. Updated info that there was no emergency signal from the plane, it was cruising at about 38000 ft, then descended to a lower altitude then once more before crash.
To elaborate a bit on the A320, the airframe family has an extremely good safety record, comparable to the most recent generation of 737s (which is the model's direct Boeing competitor). It has a better safety record than many Airbus and Boeing airliner models.
Of course, any airframe with flights numbering in the millions will eventually experience one or more crashes.
What a bad few years for flying. Seems like we're reading about a new crash every other month or so. Scary and sad.
