How terrible. Obviously the guy wanted the plane to crash. I can understand being suicidal, but here it's more than that, as he killed lots of innocents with him. We'll never know what was in his mind, and I can't imagine what the families are going through right now, including his - knowing it was deliberate.
What I don't get is why another crew member isn't required to step into the cockpit when one of the pilots has to use the "potty". A flight attendant in there could have interrupted the copilots plan or at least opened the door for the pilot.
Maybe the Israeli's have it right (El Al Airlines), an armed service member in an alcove just outside the cockpit door to take care of any situation that comes up. It's my understanding that you have to go through two doors on those planes to get into the cockpit, the first one is locked with a bathroom and guard in-between. No need to lock the cockpit door then.
Apparently, the member of the crew to replace a co-pilot when he/she needs to use the loo is a new American regulation put in place after 911. The Europeans did not have such a regulation on their flights.
I'm glad the Germans and French are very forthcoming with the findings. The fact of the utter silence on behalf of the co-pilot is very troubling, very curious and very strange. It's as if he knew that he wanted to kill everyone on the plane and not provide investigators any clue of the state of his mind and reasons by remaining quiet in the cockpit. A 'normal' person would have said something, had a change in their breathing pattern. It was the perfect time from him to ramble on about his reasons and his hate for the world, job, lack of love life, etc. But instead, stone cold robotic silence. I'm so sorry for the victims, it's just so gut wrenching knowing that they knew they were crashing.
MItoBH, it also leaves the question of his health open forever. We will never know for certain if he had a medical issue or if he planned it.
I hate to say it but the best thing is if they find incriminating stuff at his home or on his computer.
