The 50s actually sucked for most people. Suits, no air conditioning, McCarthy, and Jim Crow. Overall, the 70s were more fun, although nothing from that period is worth owning as an heirloom or collectible.
I was there. Age 9 through 18. the '50s were great in Northwestern Montana! In the summer we got up, had breakfast, grabbed the fishing pole or the .22 rifle and headed for the river or the woods. At lunch time (more or less) we wandered back, fixed a PB&J sammich, and headed out again. We had to be home before the street lights (what few were there) came on.
When we got home, we filled the woodbox, took out the trash, fed the rabbits (meat rabbits, we had 140 of them when we gave up the business) and our chores were done for the day.
Later in the summer, we helped in the garden, harvesting the produce.
Yes, it was a great way of life back then.
Our neighbors left us alone, and we left them alone.
If I was on the jury at that trial, the judge would have to declare a mistrial. There is no way there would be a 'guilty' from me. 11 years old without food or water for 90 minutes in a yard? My parents would have been arrested every day.
Due to this story and two or three others I've read, I've been giving my children more freedom to play outside, explore the neighborhood, walk to friends' houses, stay home alone, etc. Given their maturity level, I've granted them the independence I believe they are capable of. I'm not going to be scared some Alice Kravitz is going to call the cops on me for allowing my children to grow up the way they need to. I encourage other parents to do the same. Over the past few months, I've seen a lot of positive progress with my children as I've given them more responsibility and independence.

Oh... ok... I'll remember that the next time I'm offered 18k for my 1972 Ford Mustang..... (see my pics)
Yep, we used to grab our .22s and go exploring. By the time I was a teen I was running a trap line for extra cash. No one blinked at kids carrying guns. Today most would have a freakin heart attack.
some one complained cause they some nosy busy body control freak-with nothing else to do-- 11 ? they go find their friends-if need to unless they are special needs - shoot mine knew how to break in through a window
