No doubt the anti-gun crowd will try to make hay with this.
Sure, a good guy with a gun inadvertently shot this fellow in the head, but otherwise his vehicle could have been stolen right out from under him and the bad guys could have gotten away.
This scares me, too. When there are stories here about mass shootings such as in the movie theatres, someone always says "too bad the movie goers weren't all armed" and I just think, yes, that would have made it so much better, 50 armed panicked people all shooting at once in a dark theater.
I'm not anti-gun, but I am glad NJ's laws are stricter.

"Police found the victim's truck a few blocks away and the assailants are still on the loose."
Umm, his car WAS stolen, the bad guys DID get away. So, what positive happened? Can't be that the man now has a hole in his head. I wonder who he will sue?
I can hardly believe I'm reading this. A good guy with a gun shot this fellow in the head and that's a better outcome than having his car stolen?

So much for the OP's attempt to get ahead of the story.
This is what concerns me about 'good guys with guns' getting involved in situations. First, their ability to actually hit the target - remember this is not the range - and not to hit innocent bystanders or victims and, second, their ability to accurately identify who the good guys are and who the bad guys are and to engage the right people.
There is theory and there is practice and real life is usually a lot more complicated than the theory.

I'm pro gun and not even sure I can get on board with this.
He intervened and shot the victim in the head and you want to give him a high five?

The poster was being sarcastic I think. He'll sue to guy who shot him, of course.
Also, firing a weapon while at a gas station? This guy isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Glad no rounds hit the gas pumps or any other random people walking around.

Totally agree with you both.
