That is sad. But if I died, I'd prefer that my pets feed on me than die of starvation. It's just a body.

Apparently cats will do it within hours, but a dog will hold out for a few weeks until they're starving.

Not sure how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me. Cats seem more primal (for lack of a better word).

I feel horrible for animals in that situation - they have very heightened sense of smell. Unimaginable.

I agree. I would rather be "Minerva Chow" than have my cat starve to death. I wouldn't know what was going on.

Here's a link about cats eating people. It makes sense when you consider that dogs will eat rotting or stale meat whereas cats like nice fresh kill. My cat won't even touch canned cat food that's been sitting around for longer than ten minutes. What she doesn't eat at once doesn't get eaten at all. And as the article points out, the pet dog can scrounge around for other edibles that might be available in the house whereas the cat can't because cats are obligate carnivores and people are made of meat.

There are several websites where this is discussed.

People have been known to eat human flesh when in survival mode...the Andes plane crash in the 1970s and the Donner Party in the American West in the 1840s are two notable examples.

I would be honored to donate my organs to my cats in this manner.

There is a trick you know. When your cat snuffs their nose at the already opened can of food, take the plate away and put it up on the counter. Take a fork and mush it around stopping to tap on another fresh but unopened can of food. Talk to the cat while doing this.

Put the plate down and watch, the cat will sniff and then eat it. It isn't that the cat won't eat already opened can food, they just want you to work at it. Seriously, try it.

BTW, the dog doesn't eat first because after the cat eats the person, the dog can eat the cat and the cat will be nice and fat and the meat fresh.

The "news" get more morbid by the day. I don't need to read about this. The visions I conjure up are very disturbing and unsettling to say the least.

I'd be honored if my fluffy ate my remains if I ever croaked in her presence.
