I'm still searching for those elusive purple cows.

BTW - several years ago one of our neighbors gave birth to twins (a boy and a girl). The mother was amazed at the number of people who asked if they were identical twins or fraternal twins.

That's just ridiculous.

Everyone knows it's grape soda!

Just when I thought I had learned everything I could from City-Data, I find myself with fresh knowledge. Thanks!

That really is a surprise.

No, actually it's not.

True stories:

Many People who are from cities and have never been to a farm often have no idea where their food comes from. even some from farming communities don't know where animal products come from.

I live in dairy/farm country and we also always had a vegetable garden. I Have one one of my own now to grow or own food.

I once was commenting in the grocery store to someone in the butter department that "dairy doesn't always agree with me". Dead seriously the person said "well, butter's not dairy"! {I have actually churned butter, and on occasion, if I can get fresh milk from the farm [pasteurized but not homogenized], I still do now}

I also have a habit of calling animal foods what it really is. I once announced to a group of friends that we were having "Dead Pig" for dinner. One said "EEEW, but we're having HAM instead right?"

We passed a farm where the bulls were in one pen, and a big city cousin said there "were a LOT of cows". We corrected and said no, those were the bulls. My cousin asked if "we could stop and watch them milk the bulls, then?".

Somewhere, I forget now, but told a coworker I had to clean up "meadow muffins" the day before. "Oh, I just love muffins. What does a meadow one taste like?" {the farmer's cows got out of the pen near our house and left "meadow muffins" in our yard {"cow patties" "cow chips", "meadow chips" etc, are other names..in other words cow PooP}.

I also had someone who, upon me commenting about the old chicken feather pillows of my grandmother's, did not know chickens had feathers! They thought chickens actually lived like the ones on the grocery store shelves.

Also, once, I don't remember exactly where, but a co-worker wanted to get a goat for their 3 acre rural parcel, as dairy {cow's milk} did not agree with her. She commented that she wanted a billy goat as they were cheaper to get. I said "you need a nanny". She said, "no, I don't have kids, I don't need a nanny, I need a billy goat for goat's milk!!!

There is a LOT of processing of foods behind the scenes now that is taken care of for us, that disenfranchises us from it's source. Not all city kids are not in the know" about their food, sometimes one source of food {like our dairy farms} is not known about another source{such as slaughtering animals} to people who live amidst food sources.

Sad, but true. Just wait till we have "replicators" on Star Trek, and we'll NEVER know where the "food" comes from!
