I don't think a 12 year old can really understand the consequences of her actions (a lot of 25 year olds can't, either, and a few 50-somethings as well). That's the whole point of having juveniles treated differently in the courts from adults.
The perp sees horrible things done on TV all the time, but actors are back unblemished in the next show. That break from reality makes it even harder to understand consequences.
You argued against your point by including 25 and 50 year olds in the same boat.
A crime, is a crime, let a jury decide the guilt or innocence and let the victim decide the punishment, that would cut down on crime.
Just saw the news coverage. One of the neighbors said that this is a tragedy for two families (the victim's and the assailant's). Well, it irks me to hear that. First of all, it is very difficult to presume the innocence of the assailant's parents. Second, it's like worrying about the shooter's parents right after a mass shooting and killing. My compassion goes only so far and stays right on the victim's side. No more.

At least make those heathens and their parents sit down and look at a picture of what they did to their "friend" every single morning.
Unbelievable.
Excuse you, but there are plenty of god-free folks like myself who take offense to the word "heathen" being used to describe this child. This is no different than using the "n" word or any other slur.
MAN these stories morph so quickly. So apparently the burned girl moved in with the family for about a month. Who knows why. This wasn't a sleepover, that much seems to be a purposeful lie by the victim girl's family. This burned girl lived there in the house as a permanent guest. And between one girl pouring icewater on another girl, and the retaliation was pouring boiling water back, it does seem possible that the girl really didn't fully understand the harm she did.
The link upthread posted by cochristi was illuminating.

As if religious people don't do horrible crap.
To be fair, we don't know the race of the assailant in this story.
Your prejudice is showing.
No one is describing the victim as a "heathen" here.
