There weren't "removed". These weren't false eyeballs that can be replaced. They were gouged out, severing the optic nerve.

Absolutely awful.

This is a summary of from public court records in Hamilton County, Tennessee from his previous arrest in Chattanooga where this atrocity occurred:

On March 29, 2006 Michael Deshun Roberson was arrested by Chattanooga Police Officers for resisting stop and frisk and halt, three counts of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. On July 30, 2007 Michael Deshun Roberson was found not guilty by reason of insanity and all charges were dismissed. It suffices to say he cannot be considered a habitual offender for the egregious act that he committed on his victim.

Another criminal justice success story.

Exactly......SMH at those who think a long prison term/life is warranted here......so us taxpayers can continue to pay for this scumbag to get 3 meals a day, free medical care and cable TV????

Waiting for some bleeding heart to chime in on how the death penalty doesn't prevent or deter crimes like this from happening......WHO CARES??!!!.....if it removes this one subhuman like this from living on this planet it has served the rest of society well!

No one agrees with you both more than I do on what Roberson's fate should be. Unfortunately, in 2007 he was found not guilty by reason of insanity for aggravated assault by a judge in Hamilton County Criminal Court. Roberson's mental incompetency to stand trail for attempted first degree murder will undoubtedly be used by his public defender when he's indicted and during subsequent hearings. Regardless of the disposition of his case this monster has scarred his victim in a manner so despicable that there is no punishment harsh enough to match the pain he's inflicted upon her.

I could rant on for hours about this and mental health services in our country. But I won't.

I've come to the cold, inhuman conclusion that the most humane thing to do in these cases is to take him out behind the barn and put an end to his wretched existence.

It we think that we are being a more civilized society by allowing people this damaged to attempt to live normal lives we are insane (and self-destructive) ourselves.

How horrifying. That poor woman. I cannot imagine even ~wanting~ to do that to another human being, much less committing the actual act.
