I'm in no way "addicted" to my phone, but I wouldn't give mine up for any amount of money. My phone allows me to see daily photos and videos of my new grandbaby, to stay in touch with my grown sons who all live in other states, to check in on my elderly parents (also in another state), to be able to reach anyone in an emergency, and just to stay connected with friends and family all over the country.
I do all that from my laptop in my living room, or a $50 tablet if I am traveling.. I just can'd do it from the Walmart parking lot or standing in line at the bank. As for emergency, I can honestly say that I have never made nor received an emergency call in my life, but if I were that worried about it, I could get a Tracphone for $80 a year, and also annoy other people by making all my personal calls from the doctof's waiting room..
Easy peasy. There is no cell service at my house, so I don't have a cell phone. Hmm. I do have Skype on my tablet, and wifi is not that hard to find if I'm traveling.
It looks like they'll give you a phone for texting and phone calls that isn't a smart phone. I should enter. I have a "smart" phone now that I only use for incoming phone calls and a few texts. Plus, in 6 months I'll be living without electricity for a year or so. This would be a cinch for me to win.
Yes, that’s what I saw on the news a few nights ago. The idea is to not leave someone without any phone at all. A few years ago I replaced my flip phone that did not connect to the Internet with a Smartphone because the flip phone died. I also still have a land line.
If they are using the kind of flip phone I used to have it’s very basic, you can’t text on it.
I got my first smartphone less than a year ago. I don't often give out the number because I don't like talking on the phone, and I'm not going to answer if I'm out running around. Just call the house phone and leave a message.
However, the smartphone is great for directions. We've been traveling a LOT in the last ten months (Google says we're 1/3 of the way to the moon), and not having to try to follow a friend's garbled directions is priceless.
Otoh, I could get a really nice GPS for a hundred grand.
I have one I could do without but.....

I'm not on Twitter or Instagram! That helps explain why I could go without it.
