Oh I missed that part. They are't learning much in 3 days.
Home Ec was a full year regular class for me.
Cooking-sewing-home budget/financial stuff.
We spend months on each section before moving on.

I also had a typing class in HS. Full year..regular class..really called "typing class".

Took the following as six week electives.
1:child development. You bet it taught us first aide, food prep for infants, immunization charts, and how to guide children thru phases.
2: car safety and maint.
3:accounting basics. Wish they would have introduced us to tax forms and filing.
4: home ec. Loved sewing and making cultural meals!
5: basic budget class. It was hilarious! Asking a teen to choose...do you buy the most recent album or pay your car insurance. Buy those jeans or pay the parking fine.

I know how to change a tire. Problem is after my arm injury the arm cannot bust a move. So as much as I am independent. ..I had to get motor aide thru my insurance.
And yes I've had my cell reception be lost during poor weather. Or over some mt.

My dad (foster),though taught me home repair. Install fans, fix the plumbing. Level a door. Carpentry.

Kids do need these skills ..sad though that some here choose the pass the buck ..

I also agree that much of what I can assume the curriculum would consist of are things that used to be taught in Home Ec and Shop, programs that no one complained about paying taxes to support up until the '90s when such things were cut from schools.
I agree, I see the term 'adulting' used so much on FB, usually its adults claiming they do not want to be 'adulting' today.

Seems like when I younger (before I was an adult), plenty of other young people wanted to BE ADULTS TOO SOON...now its like its the total opposite?!!

Not really that hard to lose cell reception unless you never leave the big city. And plenty more places where the nearest tow truck might be two or more hours away.

Don't need adulting classes when you CAN LITERALLY GOOGLE/YOUTUBE how to do ANYTHING.

I live near Raleigh. Not exactly the “big cityâ€. It’s probably been 10 years since the last time I encountered an area with no cell reception. Coverage has increased drastically since then. And even the most rural areas have tow trucks closer than two or more hours away.

I wish they'd teach skepticism and reading between the lines. For example a car that's "bigger than ford, faster than chevy, and taller than toyota" might rank #3 out of 4 in every category.

Personal finance is obviously a big one. Back to the car theme, how many 18-year-olds buy a car without having any clue about operating and ownership costs? How many 30 year olds buy houses still not thinking about this stuff?

Or what's really happening when someone offers you credit.

A few hours on how to interview for a job would be another one...just a few pointers that might seem obvious but aren't.

Something about nutrition would be good. There's so much bad information out there, because industry dominates what we hear.

As for sewing buttons, I'm a guy and have found it useful multiple times.

I don't think it's a bad idea, but with the internet there's so much we can look up. I have looked up Youtube tutorials on so many things. I did it a few weeks ago to see how to change a headlight in my car (auto store said they weren't able to do it for my specific car).

But some people are more hands-on and I do think certain things would be better done in a classroom setting

Of all the things I learned in High School, I think the stuff I learned in "Home and Family" is among the most valuable.

To wit:

buy the biggest, densest head of lettuce in the bin, and the smallest head of cabbage because lettuce is sold by the head, and cabbage by the pound (and this still holds true, 30 years later)

reach to the back of the packaged meat display to get the freshest packages

how to change a tire - which I used 20 years ago, wearing heels and a dress in the middle of nowhere, and then 6 months ago in a prison parking lot, again, in the middle of nowhere

how to speak to management, and write a letter of complaint that gets results (WOW I should have put that first, THAT I've used innumerable times, successfully)

I'm over 60 and I've NEVER changed a tire, even though my dad showed me and my siblings when I was about 17 or 18. I thought way back then "yeah...I'm not going to do that." And I've never ever had to. Change my oil? Pfft. I'll go to Jiffy Lube. Thanks.

Knowing how to balance a checkbook? Why? Nearly every teenager carries around a smart phone that can tell you the balance in your checking acount at any given moment. Is it REALLY the best use of tax dollars to teach that to a teenager? And if it must be taught, can't it be taught in math class?

Stuff like that. IMO, the best use of tax dollars for these teens is how to get the most use out of a smart phone, the best apps, and so on and so forth.

LOL I see things 100% opposite of you and couldn't imagine anything more important than teaching kids these basic concepts. Forget English, Science, History and Math.... Teach them basic life concepts first.
